New School Year Begins with Changes

Cadets arriving at J.P. Taravella's NJROTC unit were greeted by a new, although not unfamiliar, face. LCDR David Thomas was hired 10 August as the unit's new Senior Naval Science Instructor replacing CDR Keith Ullman. LCDR THomas was the SNSI at Dr. Michael M. Krop Senior High School in Miami before assuming the duties as our SNSI. Many of us know him from Area SEVEN events, especially Leadership Academy. LCDR Thomas' is a Florida certified Social Science teacher as well as a BCPS and NETC certified Senior Naval Science Instructor. Learn more . . .

MSGT PATTERSON DEPARTS J.P. TARAVELLA

Like that wasn't enough, the Trojan Company endured yet another transition with the departure of MSGT Sam Patterson. MSGT Patterson submitted his resignation to Mr. Cerra on Friday, 1 October citing personal reasons for his departure. MSGT will truly be missed by the cadets and staff alike. He is a marine's marine and we all wish him fair winds and following seas.

Trojan Company Continues to Prepare for Felix Varela

October 16, 2004 looms large in the minds of the Trojan Company as it continues to prepare for the first event in its competitive season - Felix Varela. Felix Varela high School is one of the newest additions to the NJROTC family. Now in their second year, the unit is looking to host their first field meet. It is not a sanctioned field meet but is important nonetheless. It gives the units a chance to "size up" the competition. Currently 12 schools are scheduled to participate and just about all of them are local to the South Florida area. We will see Boca Raton, Flanagan, Braddock (three of Area SEVEN's heavy hitters) as well as Miami Beach, Krop, Fort Lauderdale, and Nova. We encourage you to mark your calendars - Saturday - 16 October - Felix Varela NJROTC Field Meet. Plan to attend and support the cadets as they begin their competitive season. The school's address is 15255 SW 96th Street, Miami. It is located SW of the Florida Turnpike. Going South exit the Turnpike at 88th Street/Kendall Drive (Exit 20) Travel west on Kendall Drive to 152nd Avenue. Turn left anto 152nd Avenue. Felix Varela is located on the right. Cadets from the school will direct you to visitor parking.
