Wild Plants
Home
There are a very large number of wild plant species in our area of Belize. They yield such varied products as soap, sandpaper, brooms, twine, rope, drinking water, roofing material, incense, dye, medicine, food, rubber, etc. We would like to learn how to identify all of the plants and know all of the plants' uses. As a measure of our progress, we still cannot identify ~80% of the trees for example. We have, however, identified the following wild plants within 10 minutes walk from the commune center.
We have arranged the plants alphabetically by common (or local) name and have included where possible, the botanical name and some of the plant's uses. We welcome information about other uses for these plants.
