Chapter 10

CHAPTER 10
The next day at the studio Nadine was floating on air. She felt as though nothing could possibly go wrong in her perfect world.
She was wrong.
It was her turn to be the station manager so as she got the necessary props ready she hummed Brian McNight's "Back at One." She barely even noticed as they aired.
She glanced at her clipboard. . . .and sighed. Randy was the first broadcaster, with a late breaking public affairs news editorial. Nadine tried to focus her attention on the show but she couldn't until Randy began to speak.
"Hello, this is Randy Carp with a late breaking public affairs news editorial. Justin Timberlake, teen heartthrob of the popular pop boyband *NSYNC, was at the 183 street park last night with his . . . .woman of the week. What, might you ask, were they doing? It seems that Justin was seducing his young lady friend in the tube on the children's playground. Now viewers, I ask you, would you want your children playing at a park, where a young man that your children look up to, adore and idolize, is fucking his whore in a tube? I didn't think so. Thank you and goodnight." Randy got up from his chair and left the studio.
Nadine stood in shock. At first she didn't really care because even if this was aired, he hadn't mentioned her name, but when he continued she assumed that it would go through editing and be cut out, forgetting that this was a live broadcast. Nadine tried to compose herself but couldn't. She knew that people would figure it out soon enough if she continued to stand there like a slack jawed yokel.
Ten minutes later Justin stormed into the studio.
"Where's Randy Carp?" he demanded angrily. No one answered. "Would somebody please answer me?" He glanced around the studio and caught site of Nadine.
"Nadine? What are you doing here?" he asked quizzically.
"Justin. . . .I can explain," she stammered.
"I thought you were at school, that's what you told me last night." Nadine blushed from the curious stares of her coworkers as they began to put two and two together.
"I. . .I am at school, you see. . ." she began hesitantly.
"I don't wanna know!" snapped Justin. "I can't believe that you would lie to me! I thought that you loved me," he said in an anguished whisper that broke her heart in two. His face hardened once again.
"I guess I won't be needing this now, will I?" he asked throwing a small red box on the floor. He stalked out of the studio, a moment later the screech of tires echoed throughout the building. Nadine sank to her knees and began to sob.
*****
For the next three days Nadine stayed in the apartment. She didn't want to see anybody or do anything.
She had heard from Melba that Randy had been fired. He had also been questioned by the police for televising inappropriate material on a live television program that had a general rating for a family. But after that he had virtually disappeared from the face of the earth.
Krystal, Melba and Cara were now dating Justin's friends and she was happy for them but it brought her too much pain to be around them. She had heard from Krystal that they were returning to Florida and she sent her heart with them. With him.
Melba had brought her the red box that Justin had thrown on the floor and reluctantly Nadine had opened it. And then wished with all of her heart that she hadn't. Inside the box was a promise ring. It was her birthstone in a rose and Justin's birthstone in a rose. The stems of the two roses twined together and the inscription on the inside read "Justin and Nadine together forever. I promise"
On the third day, she finally dragged herself out of bed to answer a knock at the door.
"Yes, how can I help you?" she asked the uniformed policemen. She figured that she must look pretty ridiculous to them, a grown woman who had spent the last two and a half day crying, hadn't bathed, and was wearing flannel pajamas with chickens on them.
"Ma'am, we need to bring you before a judge. For a statement on what happened," one said.
"Fine. . . .when?" she said tiredly, leaning against the doorjamb for support.
"Well, now ma'am," the other one said surprised.
"Fine, I'll be ready in twenty minutes."
"We'll be waiting in the police car in front of the building," the said and turned away. Nadine sighed and shut the door.
*****
"And she hasn't left the house in days and she only went out today because she had to give a statement to a judge," said Krystal into the phone.
"I know," the person on the other line whispered. "He doesn't do anything, just sits and stares. He misses her but he won't admit it."
"I miss you," Krystal whispered.
"I miss you too, but even though we aren't physically together we are in spirit. We aren't dying because we let that go," Lance said philosophically.
Krystal sighed, he was right. They had to do something. That was when Nadine walked through the door in a trancelike state.
"I gotta go, tell everyone I said hi, love you , bye!" she said in a rush and hung up before Lance could even say goodbye.
"What happened?" she asked Nadine, who looked at her with tears in her eyes.
"I'm being arrested, tomorrow morning," she said in a monotone.
"Oh my God, why?"
"Randy told them it was my article, they believed him. And unless Randy admits or Justin comes to my defense. . . ." Nadine trailed off, the tears in her eyes finally spilling over. "He hates me, he wouldn't help me," she sobbed.
Krystal did the only thing that she was capable of ding at the moment. She sat and cried her eyes out with Nadine. When Michelle came home, she joined them and they all sat there crying for about an hour.
Suddenly Michelle got up and ran out of the room.
"Guess she's taking it pretty hard," said Krystal.
"No she's still mad at me," sniffed Nadine.
*****
"Hello?" Joey asked.
"Hi Joey, it's Michelle." She and Joey weren't together. They decided that since they were apart they would see other people and unless there was someone serious would date when Joey was in New York. "Listen, I need a huge favor," she continued.
"What's wrong?"
Michelle quickly ran through the story.
"Oh wow," was all that Joey could say.
"And the only way that she isn't going to jail is if Randy confesses, and we all know that isn't gonna happen or. . . ."
"Or what?" Joey asked, eager to help.
"Or if Justin stands as a witness to her defense at the hearing."
"Shit," Joey mumbled. The latter didn't seem any more likely than the first.
"Yeah," Michelle agreed. "I better go, but I wanted to let you all know."
"Yeah, thanks, bye," Joey said, hanging up. He walked into the large family room. He sat next to Justin on the couch.
"Ya know Justin, it's a real shame abut Nadine," Joey said.
"Just shut the fuck up," said Justin, still staring into outer space.
"We all know you had strong feeling for her, still do," said Joey, indicating to the other guys who were getting interested in what Joey was up to.
"Yeah well she's a lying, fucking bitch," Justin replied.
"Then I guess you know about her," Joey sighed.
"Yeah, a little late but I know all about her," Justin said getting up.
"Don't you think that's a little harsh?" demanded Joey. "I mean, I understand that she broke your heart and all but don't you think that it's pretty stiff punishment to make her go to jail for it?"
"What?" Justin asked, his face finally betraying some emotion.
"You said you knew," Joey replied.
"I didn't know about that," Justin said. "I gotta go." He grabbed his car keys. He turned around when he reached the door. It was the first real smile that his friends had seen in days.
"Thanks Joey," he said.
*****
Nadine sat in the chair. It was three in the morning. In six hours she was going to jail.
She was surprised to hear a knock at the door. It was probably Melba, who had most likely just realized that the phone was unplugged. She lethargically walked to the door and threw it open.
"What?" she snapped. She looked up into Justin's face. "What are you doing here?" she demanded coldly.
"Nice to see you too Nadine," he replied casually. "Aren't you going to invite me in?"
"No, I'm not," she said.
"OK. Fine with me but I wouldn't want to wake up my neighbors at three in the morning if I was you though," he said complacently.
"Fine, get the fuck in!" she yelled slamming the door behind him. "Say whatever the fuck you want and then get the fuck out. You have three minutes," she said looking at the clock.
"Nadine Joey told me what happened," he began but stopped when he saw the look of confusion on her face.
"How did Joey know?"
"I don't know, but he did and he told me and I want to let you know that I'll stand in your defense tomorrow," he said.
"No, I don't want you to stand in my defense," she said stubbornly.
"Why not? I'm offering you an out!" he exclaimed.
"Because you're offering me an out because if you don't you'd be ridiculed by your fans and friends!" she screamed.
"I'm doing this because I have to," he said slowly and evenly.
"You don't have to! Why don't you understand? I don't want you to! I would rather go to prison for the rest of my life than to have you help me!" she yelled.
"Why?" he asked confused.
"Because I love you," she admitted softly.
"If you love me then why won't you let me help you?" Justin asked enfolding her in his arms. She didn't resist him but lay against his chest as if that was the one place in the world where she truly belonged.
"I can't let you help me because I love you and I know that you don't love me back. You're just doing this for your own personal gain. I would rather spend the rest of my life in prison, separated from the rest of the world and to never see you again then to go on living knowing that you could never love me and that you are giving your love to someone else," she said. Even though she had just given that very passionate declaration she still snuggled against him and held onto him as if she would never let him go.
"Why would you think that I don't love you?" he asked tilting her head up. Her eyes sparkled with tears.
"How could you love me?" she asked tremulously.
"How could I not?" he answered. "Nadine I love you so much. When I found out that you had lied to me it broke my heart."
"Oh Justin," she said,"I'm so so so-" she was cut off by his lips.
Nadine had never felt so whole in her entire life. So complete. So loved.
Justin guided them to the couch where they landed with her in his lap. She could feel the evidence of his desire against her backside. She locked her legs around his waist as he began to undress her.
As ever inch of her flushed flesh was exposed to his hungry gaze, he made her feel loved with the tender caress of his tongue and the whispered endearments he murmured into her ear.
He had never seen her completely naked in the light and with her creamy flesh tinted pink from the rosy light of the lamp, she far exceeded his wildest expectations. She blushed under his silent scrutiny of her body.
"I've never felt so naked in my life," she said shyly.
"Well, why don't we take care of that?" he hinted slyly.
Her fingers deftly untucked his shirt and lifted it over his head. She loved him now more than ever with his curly hair tousled and his crystal blue eyes glazed with passion. Knowing that he was giving his love to her.
She licked her way down his smoothly muscled chest. When she reached his belt she began to slowly work her way up. She swirled her tongue around his hard nipples. She dipped her tongue into his navel and followed the hair lower to his belt. She unhooked his belt and pants and pushed them down, along with his baby blue silk boxers.
She pressed her tongue against his flagrant arousal and ran her tongue up and down the length of it. She nipped the tip playfully with her teeth. She sucked it like a lollipop and when she felt that he was ready to explode she removed her mouth.
She grabbed a condom and rolled it over his masculine spoon. She straddled him, one leg on each side and slowly sank down. She felt him go deep inside of her and she yelled from the pleasure. Justin began to groan as the undulating movement of her hips brought him closer and closer to his climax.
"What the fuck?" they heard a voice yell from the hallway. Justin and Nadine froze. Nadine slowly turned her head. Krystal was standing in the hallway with her mouth hanging open.
"I'll just leave you to do whatever you want. I'm never gonna sit on that couch again!" she said as she left.
Nadine collapsed against Justin's chest.
"That was awkward," she said.
"Yeah," he shifted slightly. "Ummm. . . .Nadine do you think that we can ummmm. . . .finish?" he asked scrunching his face up.
"I dunno," Nadine replied sexily, teasing her lips against his. She lifted her hips and brought them back down on Justin's.
"Guess that's a yes," Justin said happily, resuming what they had started before being interrupted.
Justin thrust into her a final time and Nadine knew that she would be his forever. . . .after all a promise is a promise.
