Whoever didnt go to this show should be shot. This had to be the best gathering of metal bands/heads that Victoria has ever seen. Heres a review of how the all the bands did. There really isnt anything negative to say about any of the bands because they all went out there and tore that stage up.
To kind of set the atmosphere, there was a "Fuck Lucifer" message on the wall. Very nice, guys. Anyone who didn't know the story behind that was probably enlightened when almost every single band, dont think Lordiel did but thats ok cuz they didnt know about it, told Lucifer(an alias used in the Southtexas Metal guestbook) to go fuck himself. Most bands had written songs about Lucifer calling him out and telling him what a pussy he is. Anyway lets get to the bands:
The Paybacks-These guys are always great. You dont have to like punk music to appreciate their performances. They are funny guys and always get the crowd going. During their first song the crowd erupted into a violent pit, this would set the crowd up for moshing almost every goddamn second of music. Its really great to get that kind of reaction from people. Anyways The Paybacks did a few covers; 'I turned into a Martian" by the Misfits and "The Monster Mash" by god knows who made that up.
Lordiel-3 words;Sweet Fucking Christ. Lordiel started off their set with "The Requiem" by the Trans-Siberian Orchestra. Issac impressed the crowd with his eerie keyboard sounds while the bass and guitar complimented the keyboard perfectly. I was so taken by the pure musicianship of this that as soon as I got home I downloaded it off Napster. When the last of those fucking eerie ass chords had been drowned out by the crowds shouts and applause, Justin, the lead singer, made his way to the stage. The band then launched into an orginal "Demons". Once again the crowd turned into a violent sea of fists and bodies. I was just blown away by the pure musicianship of each and everyone of the guys in Lordiel. You can tell that these guys dont fuck around when it comes to their music.
Sircle Switch-Is it just me or did all of these guys do some serious growing up in the past month or so? They even sounded more grown up during their set. The guitars sounded thicker, the singer's voice sounded deeper and the drums were much more together this time around. I was quite impressed, I kept remarking on how much these guys had improved on their sound since the last time we had heard them. These guys need to keep it up, because they are definately going somewhere with their sound.
Sincerely Yours-Definately a crowd favorite. At their first gig when I asked the lead singer, Richard, what they sounded like he replied with something like "It aint like anything you've every heard". Boy was he right. Sincerely Yours at one minute is a raging storm of hate and emotion driven by the quick double-bassing of Mike D and then in a blink of an eye there are melodic and quiet. This band is so unpredictable that all you feel like you can do is just get lost in the music and wherever it takes you. The vocals are like some kind of drug induced nightmare that I've had before. The guitars are very different from the normal hardcore guitars. Not like anything I've ever heard before definately sums it up. My God this band is a fucking trip.
Illusive-I'm not gonna be an ass and review my own damn band. But from my position on stage it looked like you guys were lovin it. Anyone can write a review of Illusive if they want.
Dusted-These were the guys everyone had waited to see all night long. We soon found out that it was well worth the wait. I guess the old cliche that everyone's first gig sucks was broken entirely by these guys. Powerful thick guitars, crazy ass singer and a fucking lunatic playing the drums. When I first heard the Dusted Demo I must admit I was a little bit skeptical as to if they could really pull off sounding like that in a live atmosphere. Holy shit did they make me a believer. They managed to be just what they were selling in their demo; a fucking kick ass band. Nice covers of Hatebreed,Soulfly(or was it Sepultura? damn too much weed later that night) and Cheech and Chong.
Kick ass show, thanks to everyone who played, thanks to everyone that showed up(your all great for supporting the scene), most of all thanks
to Dusted for putting on the best damn show that I've been to in a long time. Let me know what you think about this review, email-fiend@red-demon.com
