Angra was first formed when Andre Matos(vocals) and Kiko Loureiro(guitarist) got together. Matos had just left his previous band, known as Viper, because of creative differences and formed Angra.
Angra's sound varies from album to album. My personal favorite has always been "Angels Cry". But I have heard many many rave reviews regarding "Rebirth" as well, and have yet to listen to it. "Angels Cry" was as trademark melodic metal as they come! An awesome tour de force album from start to finish. When "Holy Land" came out, it had a good welcome. While the same sound from the previous album still existed, one could easily notice a small change. The classical nature was somehow missing. The third album, entiteled "Fireworks" was later released in 1998. The sound of "Angel's Cry" and "Holy Land" was no where to be found. This was a regular heavy metal album. Not to say it wasn't good. All the Angra albums are good, and Andre Matos has one of the best voices in the metal industry today! He has sooo much range!
Later on, many things happened. Andre Matos decided to eventually leave the band and form some side projects. Some of which are Shamen and Virgo. Unfortunately that wasn't all that was lost. The band also departed with their bassist and drummer. Loureiro then recruited vocalist Edu Falaschi, drummer Aquiles Priester, and bassist Felipe Andreoli to form the new line-up that is now Angra once again. The band's newest album since the new line-up has been properly named, "Rebirth". As soon as the album was released it was praised by many to be one of the best if not the best album by Angra to date!! I highly recommend checking it out. After all when true metalheads say its good then... its good!!
