About The Artist

Michael Kaluta was born August 25th, 1947 at Guatemala City, Guatemala, Central America to William and Clotilde Kaluta (both Americans stationed there just after WWII). He attended Richmond Professional Institute (now Virginia Commonwealth University) in Richmond, Virginia from 1966 to 1968, studying Fine Arts.

From 1969 to 1973, he was in New York and began working in comics, doing work for Charlton Comics, D.C. Comics, Marvel Comics, Blast Magazine and Web of Horror Magazine. He also did illustration work for Amazing and Fantastic digest magazines.

In 1976, Michael teamed up with three other artists (Jeffrey Jones, Berni Wrightson, Barry Windsor-Smith) to form The Studio. In 1980, he met Elaine Lee and designed the sets, costumes and poster for her sci-fi stage play Starstruck, Network Theater, 51st & 9th, NYC (defunct). Later that same year, he began drawing Starstruck as a comic with Elaine Lee as the writer. For the next two years, he worked on this project almost exclusively until 1983, when he again did the sets and costumes for a new production of Starstruck. That same year, Starstruck was released by Marvel as a graphic novel, followed in 1984 by a six-issue Starstruck run in Marvel/Epic Comics.

After the end of Starstruck comics in 1985, Michael did covers and illustrations on a four-book set designed for young adult readers, My Name Is Paris (authored by Byron Preiss and published by Random House). His talents were also seen in the animation for the music video of the Alan Parsons Project song Don't Answer Me. Michael continues doing work in a variety of forms - theatre design, calendars, posters, comic covers, album covers as well as conceptual designs for the Warner Brothers movie Osmosis Jones in 1999. He also does a number of privately commissioned works.

In 2001, a retrospective of his work to date was published by NBM Publishing, Inc. under the title of Wings of Twilight: The Art of Michael Kaluta (ISBN 1561632767 for those interested in obtaining it).
