Artist Spotlight

Mike Deodato Jr.

My sincerest thanks to Mr. Deodato for agreeing to be my first entry in the Artist Showcase. I have long been an admirer of his work, which only seems to get better and better with every drawing.

About The Artist

A lot of newer fans have been wondering about illustrator Mike Deodato's comic-book credits. Deodato began drawing comics, some of them written by his father, in the '80s in Brazil. Many of those comics, in fact, were reprinted a few years ago by Caliber Comics in a seven-issue set that included the masthead "Deodato Comics."

Although he technically began work in American comics working on a couple of small Malibu projects, Mike Deodato first catapulted into comicdom's consciousness painting the Linda Hamilton/Ron Perlman version of BEAUTY AND THE BEAST for Innovation, followed by QUANTUM LEAP, LOST IN SPACE, and even the inks for MACK BOLAN: THE EXECUTIONER.

Soon after, Deodato developed a super-hero style and began penciling for Continuity Comics. Then he took over WONDER WOMAN at DC for a year, more than doubling that book's sales through cool art and genuine fandom word-of-mouth rather than any DC hype. It exploded his career!

After inking a FLASH and doing a bit of (mainly) inking on TUROK for Acclaim, and painting the Peter David-penned "Catman" story for Harlan Ellison's DREAM CORRIDOR, he also painted a 20-something-page story for Tundra that never saw print.

What DID see print, however, was a prodigious output of comics. Some GLORY for Image, and even a GEN 13-related story, but primarily art for Marvel: AVENGERS, ELEKTRA, HULK, SPIDER-MAN, THOR, X-MEN and, now, WITCHES.

Following his exclusive two-year stint at Marvel, Deodato didn't want to go stale doing the same thing again and again. He went on to do BATMAN for DC, Lady Death and PURGATORI at Chaos, an impressive run of XENA: WARRIOR PRINCESS at Dark Horse, CHYNA II (a WWF comic) at Chaos, JADE WARRIORS at Image, even painted CONAN covers for a foreign publisher -- all the while developing a super-tight pencils-only style that would get noticed by Marvel on X-MEN and would immediately lead to his new, upcoming WITCHES series.
