Lady Mariko Yashida

Death In: Wolverine - Issue 57, July 1992

"So where do I get off fallin' for a ... a lady like Mariko Yashida? Love. Who needs it? Me." (Logan - Uncanny X-Men, Issue 120)

From their first meeting way back in Uncanny X-Men #119, Mariko proved to have the uncanny knack of being able to bring out the inner man in Wolverine. His infatuation with her was in many ways the start of spotting the soul behind the claws. His tapping at the window of a car to give her a white chrysanthemum is the first romantic gesture we get to see him make.

Their relationship survived many stumbling blocks that would have ended other love affairs: Mariko's arranged marriage to another man, Logan's fight to the death with her father and Mastermind causing her to reject him at the altar during their wedding. In the end, not even her death has fully severed the tie. Her grave is one place that Logan makes frequent pilgrimages to and he still burns incense in her memory.
