Elizabeth Howlett's life was apparently not an overly happy one. Her marriage to John Howlett does not seem to have been a particularly affectionate union - her lover, Thomas Logan, was a drunk with pronounced violent tendancies and her own grip on sanity was haphazard at best.

We know Elizabeth had two sons (even if the paternity of the children is questionable). After the death of her first-born, John Jr., she spent time in a mental institution. On her return, she became a near total recluse, seeing only the housekeeper. Her remaining son, James, only managed to catch occasional glimpses of her when she went out on the balcony of her room.

The eruption of James' bone claws for the first time was obviously not the first time she'd seen claws, but it apparently shattered what remained of her sanity. She killed herself shortly after chasing James from the house.
