This scratchbuilt project began back in the early 1980's. Most of the reference materials at the time were model kits, blueprints and technical manuals created for Star Trek. There is much more information and in fact more accurate information available today than ever before. The best reference of all, the actual filming miniature for the series, is now on permanent display at the Smithsonian Institute.

My model has been revamped here and there since its initial construction as new references have become available. This article will go through the stages of the model's fabrication, broken down into five logical sections:
