Wooragee, meaning peppermint tree, is situated north of Beechworth on the
road to Yackandandah. Miners were attracted to the area in the mid 1800's
by the lure of gold. By the 1860's the numbers were slowly diminishing and
farming was being taken up by many of the miners. It had several hotels
providing rest for the travellers on the road to Albury and Sydney, a Post
Office and School and several churches. The rail came to Wooragee in 1891
but closing in 1953. In 1865 the population was about 400 people.
