Narrator: There was once a very strong Needle who was so wise that he was given a wonderful thread to use. It was a strong and beautiful thread, but quite invisible. The odd thing about it was that it had no end at all.
Needle: What shall I do with it for I need to share it with other people?
Narrator: He looked out over the world and saw millions of different colored beads of different shapes and sizes scattered all over the place.
Needle: I know. I will make a necklace.
Narrator: He looked down at his feet and found a BROWN bead who looked just right to begin with.
Needle: I'll call you a Scout. How would you like to be the first bead on the magic necklace?
Narrator: The brown bead was excited and said, "I would like to help by being the first bead to join." And when a BLUE bead heard this, she asked if she might join the beautiful necklace too.
Needle: I am sorry, but I am only having brown beads at the moment.
Narrator: At that the blue bead looked terribly disappointed, but she did not go away. The Needle, who did not like to disappoint anyone, thought for a while, and at last said:
Needle: I think that this necklace is meant for anyone who can see the thread and who cares to join it. I will call you a Guide and find you a place opposite the brown bead.
Narrator: He had just finished speaking when an excited whispering made him turn around. An ORANGE bead behind him was wiggling and dancing with impatience. "Oh, please let me join," she begged.
Needle: Very well. I'll call you a Brownie and we will make room for you near the blue bead. You can roll down when the time comes.
Narrator: The orange bead crowded in joyfully with the blue and brown beads. Three more BROWN beads joined a short time later as the necklace continued to grow.
Needle: I'll call you Beavers, Cubs and Venturers.
Narrator: "If you please, might I have some room too?" asked a GREEN bead. The Needle, who was very wise gave the space in the middle.
Needle: "I'll call you a Pathfinder".
Narrator: A YELLOW bead also wanted to join the necklace. It was older than the green bead, but it still wanted to be a part of the beautiful necklace.
Needle: I will call you Senior Branch. You belong on the Magic Necklace too.
Narrator: "Me too, Me too" cried a little PINK bead before the Needle could continue to speak. "I am smaller than the green bead so I can fit in."
Needle: Because you are tiny and bright, I'll call you a Spark.
Narrator: The necklace grew so large that it spread from England, to Mexico, to India and to Switzerland. In fact, it soon spread all over the world. One of the smallest pink beads felt worried that the magic thread might break. "Suppose, just suppose, I broke the necklace. What then? Would I fall off?" she asked the Magic Needle?
Needle: You need not worry. We all break the chain sometimes - it is difficult not to- but we can join the thread together again if we use the safety chain.
Narrator: "What is that?" asked the pink bead eagerly.
Needle: Our PROMISE is the safety chain. It's what keeps all together. And so you don't have to worry, I am going to add one more bead to the Magic Necklace. This bead will be DARK BLUE, and it will be called a Guider. The Guider will be there to help you feel safe, and to teach you the PROMISE.
Narrator: So, you see, we are all a part of the Magic Necklace that Lord Baden Powell started over 90 years ago. And the magic necklace will continue to grow as long as we say our PROMISE, so lets all say it together:
I promise to do my best,
To be true to my God and Canada,
I will help others,
And accept the Guiding Law.
