Dear Families,

Welcome to the 2004/2005 school year at Carlos Rey Elementary. This schoool year will be a new and exciting experience for your child, as we have team teaching in 2nd grade. This means that all of the 2nd grade teachers are woking together in content areas, thematic units, assessments and support for your student. My name is Ms. Anaya-Hallam. I am very eager to get to know your child, as I know we are going to have a wonderful year. Id like to introduce myself by telling you a little about me. I was born in Dodge City, Kansas and moved to Wyoming, where I grew up and attended the University Of Wyoming and graduated in 1997.

I have an Elementary Education degree with an a Middle School Endorsement to teach History and an Area of Concentration in Cultural Diversity. I also went to summer school this last summer and now an ESL (English as a Second Langauge) certified. I moved to Albuquerque in 2002, where I began teaching third grade and after the first quarter, transferred to first, to help lower the student/teacher ratio in first grade. I taught 2nd Grade last year and am looking forward to another wonderful year in 2nd grade! This will be an extra special year, as Mr. Looney, will be Student Teaching in our class. He will be sharing some wonderful computer technology with us. We will be lucky to have him until December!

As a teacher, I believe it’s important for a teachers to grow and be aware of the developments in teaching and educaiton. To enhance my teaching abilities, I will continue throughout the year, taking classes & workshops on new ideas and research based approaches in educaiton. I will try and pursue this, as much as possible, after class time to make it easier on my students. Since I’ve moved to NM, Ive taken the following classes:

August 3, 2003: Training on Testing Students
February 18-21, 2003: Langford Training: Ideas on student directed learning and classroom management.
April 29-30, 2003: Spring Literacy Institute. A class on Dyslexia and children with learning disabilities and Making Reading More Fun.
June 23-27, 2003: TERC: Investigations on Mathematics. Making Math more meaningful for students.
June-July, 2004: College of Santa Fe/12 hours on ESL & Linguistics

I want you all to know that my door is open for parents to share and participate in classroom activities. If you are unable to volunteer and participate during the school day, there are things that can be done to help our classroom at your convenience and at home. All is greatly appreciated! If you have any questions or concerns, you may reach me before or after school through the front office at 831-4421 and my home phone is 298-4465. I will return your call as soon as possible.

Classroom Management:
I have some positive ideas for the classroom that will help with classroom management, so students can learn as much as possible. We will have a colorful chart, which consists of four different colors. Every student has a clothespin with his or her name hanging on it that will be attached to the chart as follows.
The four colors signify:

Blue: Attendance
Yellow: After one warning, students will go to yellow. This means your child will spend 15 minutes of their recess discussing their behavior.
Green: After pulling a yellow strip and yet another warning, your child will stay in the whole recess to discuss their behavior.
Red: After another warning and pulling both the yellow and green strip, this behavior has continued to be disruptive and a parent note will be sent home to parents and a possible visit to Mrs. Touloumis, the principal, or Mr. Gonzales, the Vice Principal.

As each child moved to a new “behavior color,” I tell the students why their moving up & what they need to do in order to stay in their current color. There is no moving back in colors, but only forward. The Parent Note is to keep parents informed on their child’s behavior in class.

With this color chary, students will have the opportunity daily to ear
