Dead wood
What is the significance of dead wood in human existence? Why would Jesus convey the idea that he would prune away dead wood from the living branch to his followers?
Dead wood is dead weight for a living tree to carry. In a heavy windstorm or ice-fall, dead wood can be deadly for the tree. It also invites disease organisms to invade. It is unproductive. It creates imbalance in high winds.
In the church, dead wood can be perceived as clinging to a particular form of service even though people are acting as though they are bored or are sleeping through. Also, dead wood in church could be termed by some as "Sunday Christians"
How can I deal with my own dead wood in light of what the Bible says? Discipline, prayer and devotion to following Christ's example in my life, that's how I can deal with the dead wood in my life.
My prayer: Dear God. Please prune away anything from my life that keeps me from being an effective and productive branch of your living vine, Jesus.
Amen
