J.Eileen Mowris - Fabric artist

Title: "Isletta Pueblo Fish" Painted and dyed fabric on 20" square pillow cover
After raising two children and retiring from the corporate world, Ms. Mowris, recently moved to Mountainair, New Mexico from Tampa, Florida. Having always admired the quilting and painting work that her mother did, she started experimenting with handmade paper and stationary items. She then tried some of the techniques on fabric and was wonderfully surprised at the beautiful art work that emerged. It took some time for her to realize that it was her talent that made the material come alive. It was difficult for her to believe that she had any artistic talent at all. However, it soon became apparent to her family that she was indeed. With some encouragement from family and friends, she took her first tentative steps to get her art out into the public where immediate interest was obvious.
Soon after displaying her work in StoneTree Gallery, she became the best selling artist in the gallery. She is now hard pressed to keep up with the demand for her work. Although some people question her idea of "copying" Southwest Native American art themes, she responds that she loves the designs and out of respect for their culture she reproduces them. She has never tried to represent them as Native American art, only the motifs are Native American. Her work is distinctly her own, using Southwest colors and Native American themes, she creates some of the most unique fabric art found anywhere.
