To Mac users...
Would you like to take that familiar Mac desktop and put it onto
the PC you use at work? Are you considering buying a PC, but worry the
desktop will seem foreign?
To PC users...
Are you a PC user interested in the Mac OS "look and feel", but
aren't prepared to change platforms?
If you answered yes to any of the above questions, you should
try these few downloads, which I have tested on a number of Windows machines.
They are all easy to install and uninstall. They are FREEWARE and do not
require a payment of any kind.
Below are actual screen shots of a Windows98 desktop with these "Mac
View" running. Click on the thumbnails displayed below to see a larger

MacOS8 style desktop
Below is a list of recommended programs that can help give
your PC the...
"look and feel of a PowerPC, running Mac OS 8"
By downloading and clicking on these two (virus free) files your desktop
will be changed automatically. To change it back, just click "uninstall"
from their program menus.
Freeware
Mac
View - This program has gone through a number of dramatic
improvements in the last few months, which now places it ahead of the other
programs on my list. This free download comes with a Mac Finder,
that really does a wonderful job of acting just like a Mac finder on a
real Mac. The "About this Computer"
program looks just like the one from Mac OS 8.6 and works without any problems.
100% automatic. (updated 2000)
Highly Recommended:
Recommended System: Pentium 200 MHz or higher with at least 32 megs
of RAM.
Downside: Only faster CPUs are supported.
Mac95
- A creative desktop theme for windows from Vanessa Zoe. This program adds
Mac style wallpaper, icons, event sounds, cursors, system fonts, and startup/shut
down screens. Highly detailed. Very easy to install or uninstall. 100%
automatic. (updated 10/99)
Highly Recommended:
Recommended System: 486 or higher with at least 16 megs of RAM.
Down side: This download does not include a Mac Finder. You must download
"Mac
View" for the full mac effect.
WinMac
- A functional, customizable Mac style "Finder" menu bar and a cute
Mac Caculator. Toggle between System7 and OS8.
Recommended:
Recommended System: 486 or higher with at least 16 megs of RAM, high
colour display..
Down side: This Mac Finder looks like the older Mac Finders without
built in Icons in the Apple menu. The "About this Computer" program
looks like Mac OS 7.5. You must copy the fonts* and cursors to your
windows' sub folders using Windows Explorer.
* Thank you for you questions on Mac Fonts. When you download
and install WinMac95, you will have the true Macintosh fonts. Look
under "C:\Program Files\WinMac\extra." This folder will have the
famous "Chicago" font that we all love!
