"Shamus and his pig"
Drafting
Lesson: Writing a story by looking at a picture. "finding the story behind the picture."
Student Materials: Pencils, and paper
Teacher Materials: A marker, a set of large pictures, and overhead transparencies. The story, "Shamus and his pig."
Objectives:
After the lesson, the students will be able to write out a story by simply looking at picture. The story should show creativity and must have some structure, such as a beginning, middle, and a end, characters, and a plot.
Set:
I will introduce a picture and the sample story that goes along with it. The class and I will discuss some of the elements found in the picture. I will then read the story to the students.
Input:
I will introduce the lesson by showing interesting pictures and asking the students if they can imagine what is happing in these pictures.
Modeling:
I will write and say the words in Standard English.
Guided Practice:
The students and I will discuss what they think might make a good story. The class and I will make up a simple story to go along with one of the pictures.
Independent Practice:
The students will write their own story from the picture list. This is their draft copy, by which they will revisit at a later time.
Closure:
After we have completed the discussion about the stories, I will have the students write their own story.
Evaluation:
I will compare the individual stories to the ones discussed in class to see if the students came up with any more ideals on their own. I will also check to see if the students learned what they wanted to learn from the discussion.
