"Kn" rule

Lesson: words that end in "Kn" like knight, knit, knives, &c…

Student Materials: pencils, and paper

Teacher Materials: marker, and overhead transparencies.

Class Description: This is a lesson plan grades 3rd to 5th.

Objectives:

After the "Kn" lesson, the students will be able to write out the "Kn" rule and at least three "Kn" words.

Set:

I will introduce the "Kn" words to the students and ask them to tell me what is similar to all of them. I will then ask the students to give me some rule that these words follow.

Procedure:

As a class, the students and I will discuss what they think is similar in this word list. I will write the list on the board. The class and I will compare the list and make a phonic rule that these words follow.

Closure:

After we have completed the list and discussion about the "Kn" words, I will have the students write sentences for a few of these words.

Evaluation:

After the unit (four lessons) there will be a spelling posttest. This posttest will simply be the students writing out the "Kn" rule with a few examples.

Possible List: know, knot, knob, knoll, knock out, knock, knitting, knowledge, known, knuckle, knight, knife, knee, knell, knavish…
