Guided Reading
The teacher reads the book first to the class after he/she has introduced the book (book walk) and worked on background knowledge (KWL charts- Graphic Organizers- Book Webs- Venn Diagram- Story Maps- ). After the first reading, the students read with the teacher on subsequent readings. Choral Reading, Echo Reading, ERT... (Everyone read to...) and Shared Reading for Emergent Readers.

Self Selected Reading
This reading is multi-leveled because the children choose their own books based on book difficulty (after learning how to look for the different levels of books) and their interests.

Writing
The way children learn to read is through writing.  For many struggling students, their own writing is the first thing that they can read.  Writing workshop is made up of brain storming, drafting, editing, revising, and publishing/sharing.

Working with Words
In the working with words block, children learn to read and spell high frequency words and the patterns that allow them to decode and spell many other words.  In this block, we use word walls (with five words added per week), word wall activities, rhyming, and other phonemic awareness games.
