I do not wish to go into much detail as to the architecture of the processors or how they work in this guide as this comparison is intended to be a buyer's tool and not solely a technical reference document.  However, in order to make specification comparison easier, the below table sums up the basic differences between the processors compared here:

The CPUs: What made it and what didn't

There are obviously quite a few desktop x86 CPUs that have been released over the past 2 years, and a comprehensive comparison of all of them would take much longer to perform and would be even more complex than the comparison you're about to read.  The processors that did make it into the comparison were all desktop Intel processors clocked at 300MHz or greater (excluding the Celeron 300A which has since dried up in supply) and all desktop AMD processors clocked at 300MHz or greater (excluding the K6-300, only K6-2 and above processors were included).

I am leaving all Cyrix CPUs out of the picture because they simply do not perform on the same level as the Pentium IIs and above.

The Apple Power Macintosh G3 400 MHz    The Apple Power Macintosh G3 400 MHz CPU's performance is truly mind boggling, with scores that match an Intel PIII 550 MHz on some programs.  These programs include Adobe Photoshop 5.02 and FileMaker Pro 4.01.  This may be due in part to the G3's fast Wide Ultra SCSI-3 Hard Drive and CPU architectural design. .    The G3 400 uses the same minitower design as the G3/233 and G3/266 machines, offering three PCI slots, three synchronous dynamic RAM DIMM slots and two 5.25-inch drive bays (with front-panel access so that they can be used for removable storage or for fixed hard drives). .    As far as equipment added, this G3 has less than a similar priced PIII. The fancy USB mouse was nice, but I had to go out and buy a kingston's model, this was because the stock one is shaped like a UFO, and my hand is not, is yours????? .    Aside from it's price and lack of included equipment (scanner, printer, CD-RW, ect.), there's little change from last month.

The Intel Pentium III 550 MHz The Intel Pentium III 550 MHz CPU's performance shines when in areas the G3 does not.  For Example, it scored higher in the Photoshop Pixelate Mosaic filter based on a 40MB file and in the Photoshop Twirl filter applied to the same file.  In these two tasks, the PIII outperformed the G3 by less than 15%, which is unnoticeable by human eyes. In the 3D gaming area, however the PIII really shines while running games like Unreal, Tomb Raider III, or Quake 2 with higher, smoother frame rates. .    The PIII comes in a desktop or minitower design.  Equipped with a motherboard from Asus, this PIII has one graphics (AGP) slot, four PCI slots, three synchronous dynamic RAM DIMM slots that can handle 768 Mb of RAM. .    As far as equipment, this PIII has everything for this price (scanners, printers, ect.) .    This computer is made for home use and business use.    Back to the top

Review-
The Apple Power Macintosh iMac 333 MHz    The Apple Power Macintosh iMac 233 MHz CPU's performance is very high for a 333 MHz CPU. But not this CPU is starved for data with it's slow 66 MHz bus.    Inside, the user will find upgrade options limited. But with a built-in 10/100BASE-T Ethernet connector (RJ-45) this little machine is made for Networking!  In fact, to Network these guys, the user only needs to pull RJ-45 lines between them, connect to the Ethernet card, power-up, go to the control panel, and add the new network.  It is rather easy and the help files take you step by step. .    As far as equipment added, this iMac is made for networking! This is a good thing, because you must be on a network to transfer files between these cute computers. The fancy USB iMac mouse was nice to look at,but hard to use! So, I had to go out and buy a "iMac" Kingston's model, this was because the stock one is shaped like a UFO, and my hand is not, is yours? .    Aside from it's lack of a writable removable disk drive, there's little to dislike about this machine. The all-in-one design makes setup a snap - an area where Apple has been good at. The downside is that some of these machines from Apple have a lock up problem, which I was unable to to get over.  This may be due to Mac OS 4.6, which may have a bug or two to iron out.

The Intel Pentium III 450 MHz The Intel Pentium III 450 MHz CPU's performance shines when 3D games like Unreal, Tomb Raider III, or Quake 2 are played with higher, smoother frame rates. .    The PIII 450 MHz comes in a desktop or minitower design.  Equipped with a motherboard from Asus, this PII has one graphics (AGP) slot, four PCI slots, three synchronous dynamic RAM DIMM slots that can handle 768 Mb of RAM. .    As far as equipment, this PII has everything the normal user needs.  The built-in 10/100BASE-T Ethernet connector (RJ-45) makes networking setup very easy as with the iMac.  But for an even easier setup, buy the $100 wireless Network card, that handles everything for you (each wireless network card is $100). .    This computer is made for home use and business use.  With the true PIII, Chipset, this CPU really flies.

Review         This is a basic system that gets the work done at a very nice price.  3D game performance is not too hot, but this CPU is made for running 2D Windows 98 very fast.

I normally do not build computers with the Cyrix IBM CPU, because it is not the best performer for it's MHz range compared to the Intel CPUs.
