Magic Kingdom for Sale: SOLD!

By Terry Brooks

"Whoso would be a man, must be a nonconformist. He who would gather immortal palms must not be hindered by the name of goodness, but must explore if it be goodness. Nothing is at last sacred but the integrity of your own mind. Absolve you to yourself, and you shall have the suffrage of the world."
-Ralph Waldo Emerson, 1836 (Self Reliance)

The adventure begins when Ben Holiday, a successful lawyer whose wife died two years earlier, flips through a Christmas Wishbook and comes across a rather unusual advertisment:

MAGIC KINGDOM FOR SALE

Landover-island of enchanted and adventure rescued form the mists of time, home of knights and knaves, of dragons and damsels, of wizards and warlocks. Magic mixes with iron, and chivalry is the code of life for the true hero. All of your fantasies become real in this kingdom from another world. Only one thread to this whole cloth is lacking-you, to rule over all as King and High Lord. Escape into your dreams, and be born again.

Price:$1,000,000
Personal interview and financial disclosure.
Inquire of Meeks, home office.

Ben answers the ad but realises that Landover is actually a dilapidating country in need of more than a good king: it needs a miracle; it needs the Paladin. To help Ben through his adventures are a wizard, who is lacking any skill, the court scribe, who was turned into a dog, a sylph, and two Kobolds.

This fantasy novel combines true fantasy with humour in a wonderful way. The characters, especially, Questor Thews, a hopeless wizard, are endearing and brave, they are characters the reader will immediately love. Though the first few chapters of this book can seem so , as soon as Ben arrives in Landover, a good paced adventure begins and boredom ceases to exist. The one down fall of this book though, is , unfortunately, then main character: Ben Holiday himself. He struck me as being a rather self centred pessimistic man, which is understandable considering his back ground. Most of the book relies heavily on the other characters to amuse the reader, as our hero is more than a little sour. In the end though, Ben is, thankfully, able to make the transition from inferiating character to brave King. 7/10
