Aldous Huxley

Aldous Huxley was born in 1894. After preparatory school he went to Eton but had to leave at 17 due to serious eye problems that left him almost blind. One of his eyes recovered sufficiently. By 1919, after abandoning the hope of becoming a doctor, Huxley began to write a great deal of journalism, including biographies, architectural articles and reviews of drama, fiction, art and music. In the 1920’s he lived in Italy for the most part. In 1932 his famous futuristic novel, “Brave New World” was published. Aldous Huxley died in November 1963.

George Orwell

George Orwell’s real name is Eric Arthur Blair. He was born in India in 1903. In 1917, after his family had moved back to England, he went to Eton where he was involved with many college magazines. He later went to Burma, in 1922, where he served with the Indian Imperial Police. Orwell then went to Spain and fought with the republicans in their civil war. He was wounded and never fully recovered. During the Second World War Orwell served as a Home Guard and worked in the BBC Eastern Service. He wrote political and literary commentaries in the Tribune. The political allegory, “Animal Farm” was published in 1945. Then in 1949 the book which got him world-wide fame, “Nineteen Eighty-Four” was published. George Orwell died in London in 1950.
