After hostilities began on December 8, 1941, Lee, attached to E Battery 200th CA(AA), was transferred to H Battery 515th CA(AA) when that unit was formed — the first battle-born unit of World War II — and promoted to 2Lt. He lost his life on the Shinyo Maru when the “Hell Ship” was sunk September 7, 1944.
