Trinity Test July 16, 1945. Alamogordo Bombing and Gunnery Range (now the White Sands Missile Range), New Mexico.

“And we jumped off the train and kissed the ground. This . . .  was . . .  New Mexico.”

— Maynard Meuli, “Beyond Courage”

Prisoners witnessed both bombings: Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The 2nd bomb's primary target was originally the city of Kokura, but cloud cover over the city prompted changing the target to Nagasaki. Had Kokura been hit, the POW camps in the immediate area, including Fukuoka #3, with some 800 men held prisoner there, would have been sacrificed.
