View of Pioneer Memorial Cemetery
The original burial location for James, Anna, and Abraham Mann was in the Woodlands East (Protestant)Cemetery which was situated in Osnabruck Township in the County of Stormont opposite Croil's Island.
At the moment James'country of birth is unknown.
Many small villages along the northern (Canadian)shore of the St. Lawrence River were flooded in the late 1950’s during the making of the
St. Lawrence Seaway. Before the seaway flooding any buried bodies remained untouched, buried under the seaway waters, however the gravestones from eighteen cemeteries were preserved and moved to Morrisburg Ontario where the Pioneer Memorial Cemetery was created.
Viewing these photos, lead to some brilliant research by Mary Lou Swank from Pennsylvania, and we’re delighted to report that James and Anna Mann (nee Bockus) now have a home in someone’s family tree. Through her search, Mary Lou has also come in contact with new-to-her cousins from this family and recently made a point of meeting them.
It’s a pleasure to be able to provide the following information:
Children for James Mann and Anna Bockus
I. William B. Mann 1821-1822
II. Charles Joseph Mann (11/20/1823-4/21/1907)
III. Maria E. Mann (<1825>-3/12/1879)
IV. Abraham G. Mann (3/30/1827-11/8/1847)
IV. Charlotte (<1829>-???) (probable)
V. James Silvanus Mann (6/12/1831-10/29/1912)
Anna Bockus was of German ancestry.
Mary Lou’s g-g-grandfather was Charles Joseph Mann and lived in Altoona, Blair County, PA. He had been a mayor, was on the boards of several utilities as they were brought into the city, and was a founding member of the Second Presbyterian Church there.
Charles’ birth date of 11/20/1823 was easily found from his bio from Blair County's genealogy web site, but they only knew he was born "along the St. Lawrence River" in Canada. He lived in the Wilkes-Barre area for a while then left that area in 1857 and settled in Altoona, PA. His wife, Sarah Anna Ridall, was born in the Wilkes-Barre area. Her parents had immigrated from England around 1830.
Charles and Sarah had six children and adopted a seventh.
For additional details Mary Lou Swank would be delighted to hear from you if this family is familiar to you.
