#1-Bulbasaur ~Bulbasaur, or Ivysaur after it’s evolution, is your best bet against Misty’s Water-Type Pokémon, Staryu and Starmie. If you don’t have Bulbasaur, use an Electric or Grass-type Pokémon.
#2-Pidgeotto ~You can get this Normal- and Flying- type Pokémon by either capturing one in the wild or by building up a Pidgey to level 18
#3-Pikachu ~These are amoung the most sought-after Pokémon. But don’t keep too many of them in the same place. Their combined voltage can trigger electrical disturbances in the surrounding atmosphere!
#4-Jigglypuff ~Jigglypuff is one of the few Pokémon that evolves, no matter what its experience level, when exposed to a stone with special elemental powers. Use a Moon Stone on Jigglypuff to instantly evolve it into Wigglytuff!
#5-Venomoth ~ThisBug- and Poision-type Pokémon is short on physical ability, but long a various disabling attacks. Make sure you have a lot of Antidotes and other cures around when battling this one!
#6-Onix ~Giovanni is armed with a level-25 Onix, a level-24 Rhyhorn and a level-29 Kangaskhan. Use a team of Water-type or Grass-type Pokémon against this trio to win the Silph Scope that will help you identify ghosts a Pokémon Tower.
#7-Cubone ~Use a couple of Ground-type Pokémon, like Cubone, in your front line against Lt. Surge. If you win, you’ll recive his Thunder Badge and TM 24. Use the TM 24 to teach THUNDERBOLT to your electric Pokémon.
#8-Kangaskhan ~To recive the foolproof Master Ball, first defeat Giovanni’s Kangaskhan, Nidorino, Nidoqueen, and Rhyhorn in Saffron City. Then free the Silph Co. President and he will give you the master ball as a reward.
#9-Horsea ~To teach a water-dwelling pokémon, like Horsea, how to SURF, find the Secret House in Area 3 of the Safari Zone and win an HM03. A SURFing pokémon can carry you safely across any body of water.
#10-Electabuzz ~Like most Electric-type pokémon, Electabuzz is drawn to strong sources of electricity. To find one, you have to go to the power plant- it’s the only place you can get one!
#11-Articuno ~The Zapdos in the Power Plant was the first of three mystical Flying-type pokémon you’ll find, with Articuno being the second. It too is waiting in plain sight.
#12-Mewtwo ~To find Mewtwo, use the maps to follow the ladders through the levels in order from A to G. Once you reach the lowest level, go to the bottom-right corner to find Mewtwo Use the MAster Ball right away to capture Mewtwo!
#13-Squirtle ~Squirtle of Bulbasaur is your best bet against Brocks Rock-type Pokémon. Defeat Brock and he’ll give you his Boulder BAdge and TM34 (BIDE)
#14-Rattata ~Rattata and other wild pokémon can be found in a field outside of Cerulean City. It is a good idea to train these wild pokémon before facing Misty. [Editor’s note: If you don’t have a Rattata before Cerulean, and you REALLY want one, you must be doing SOMETHING wrong!]
#15-Ninetails ~Ninetails can’t be found in the wild at all. To obtain one, you must nurture a Vulpix until it evolves.
#16-Zubat ~Underground pokémon attack more often then above ground pokémon. Use Repel potion to avoid random combat and keep minor pokémon at bay.
#17-Gloom ~Gloom dosn’t need to move to attack, so do not try paralyzing it. It won’t affect it’s ability to fight.
#18-Diglett ~At the end of Diglett’s cave in a building near route 2, look for the HM05. It can be used to teach the FLASH ability which you’ll need soon, so don’t leave without it!
#19-Abra ~Abra dosn’t have any attack abilities [Editor’s note: I taught mine HEADBUTT, used HP up on it, and it started to really kick butt!] but it’s power to TELEPORT away from battle makes it hard to capture. If you find an Abra, try to Paralyze it right away.
#20-Geodude ~Geodude is hard to catch because its tough, rock-like skin provides a great defense against attacks. A Water- or Plant-type Pokémon is your best bet against it.
#21-Electrode ~Electrode can be found in the unknown dungeon. If you can’t find one there, look inside the power plant or on Cinnabar Island.
#22-Weezing ~Use a Ground- or Psychic-type pokémon to the pollution Weezing, Koffing, and Muk can spew. Defeat them and recive the soul badge that boosts the Defense of all your pokémon.
#23-Eevee ~Eevee can’t evolve on its own, but there are 3 special stonesthat can trigger a change. The Fire Stone, for example, turns Eevee into Flareon.
#24-Zapdos ~The only time you’ll see Zapdos is near the Power Plant exit, so try and capture it. To increase your chances, put Zapdos to sleep, then use the Ultra Ball.
#25-Metapod ~It’s good to have a mix of offensive and defensive pokémon. When you start out, build a team with Metapod, Wartortle, Pikachu, Pidgeotto, Diglett and Rattata.
#26-Nidorino ~Nidorino will use Focus Energy first to boost its power before an attack. Use that pause to attack before it does!
#27-Clefable ~One a Clefairy evolves into a Clefable, it won’t be able to learn any more attacks on its own. You may be able to teach it a new ability with a TM or HM [Editor’s Note: Clefable can learn HM04 and HM05, it can also learn the following TMs:1, 5, 6, 8-14, 17-20, 22, 24, 25, 29-35, 38, 40, 44-46, 49, and 50]
#28-Meowth ~If you have a Blue Version of the game, lookin the fields around Route 5 or 6 to find Meowth. If you have the Red Version, you must trade for one.
#29-Arcanine ~Arcanine has a big arsenal of special attacks that includes ROAR, EMBER, LEER, and TAKE DOWN. Use Ground-, Rock-, and Water-type Pokémon against it.
#30-Bellsprout ~Bellsproutoften begins a battle with GROWTH, which increses the power of its special attacks. Use you most powerful attack before Bellsprout has a chance to launch an attack of its own!
#31-Haunter ~Use Great Balls instead of regular pokéballs to capture a Haunter or a Ghastly. Most special [Editor’s Note: ??? I thought it was normal attacks...] attacks don’t affect these Ghost-type pokémon, so approach them with caution.
#32-Exeggcute ~You can use the Leaf Stone to transform Exeggcute into the 2-legged Exeggcutor, but its legs do it little good. This is one instance in which evolution may not be a good idea!
#33-Staryu ~Staryu uses its Psychic powers to move and MINIMIZE to increase its chances of avoiding an attack. Use the Water Stone to transform Staryu into Starmie.
#34-Mr. Mime ~Mr. Mime is a psychic type pokémon that can CONFUSE your pokémon into hurting themselves. To keep this from happening, switch a pokémon for another one as soon as it becomes confused.
#35-Snorlax ~Use the Poké Flute to wake up a sleeping Snorlax from its resting place. It won’t be happy about getting up, but if it attacks you can try to capture it!
#36-Moltres ~Moltres is on the 2nd level, and appears only once per game. To reach it, go up to the 3rd level, then take the ladder marked “C” to go back down. As you prepare to capture it, keep in mind that Moltres is at experience level 50!
