The MetroStars have been know to pick players in the draft in rounds in which they do not belong in. An example would be in 2000. With the first overall pick, they chose UCLA product Steve Shak. Ricardo ClarkBut that was then, and Bob Bradley is now. With the second overall pick, the MetroStars drafted Ricardo Clark. Clark, along Alecko Eskandarian, who was picked by United with the first overall pick, where considered to be the top to players in the draft. But some also say Clark has more upside, due to his versital play. He can play asa defensive midfielder, offensive midfielder, and out on the wing if needed.

When asked about his position, Clark said, "Center midfield is my natural position. That's where I've developed myself on the National Team. I think a good attribute of mine is that I'm a versatile player. I feel I can play anywhere and that's a big part of my game. What ever role Coach Bradley places me in, I will be fine."

The MetroStars management then selected 18 year-old forward Mike Magee. Magee, who plays for the Pro-40 team, scored 14 goals in 2002.

Magee, who could have gone overseas, is happy to play in MLS. "Going overseas was a great experience. I became a better player but I know that ultimately MLS was for me. It's an excellent environment for a young player like myself and a wonderful league."

GavenWith these two players, the MetroStars are considered to have had their best draft ever. In the second round, they added more youth and talent. They selected midfielder Eddie Gaven. Gaven is the youngest player to sign with MLS, at 16 year and 2 months of age. The Metros then traded defender Nelson Akwari to the Columbus Crew for their second round pick, the 17th overall. With that pick, they selected defender/midfielder Tim Regan from Bradley University. Ragen was named the 2002 MVC Defensive Player of the Year.

Arena is also the son of the US National Team Head Coach, Bruce Arena. With the 42nd overall pick, the MetroStars selected Jacob LeBlanc a midfielder from the University of Virginia. LeBlanc is also a student of the Pro-40 academy. The Revs then traded to the MetroStars their 49th overall pick for the Revolution’s natural Sixth-Round Pick in 2004.
