This project will include finished pieces of writing that the student will have revised of content, grammar, spelling and punctuation.

REQUIRED TEXTS: Achieving Clarity in English: A Whole Language Book (4th Ed.), by Adele MacGowan-Gilhooly, Kendall/Hunt Publishers (1996)

Five dividers labeled: SYLLABUS, VOCABULARY, GRAMMAR/FREEWRITES, DEJ (Double-entry journal) and PORTFOLIO. An English to English dictionary. Pens, pencils, erasers, a computer disk and anything else you need for writing.

COURSE REQUIREMENTS:

1. Reading Journal (Double-entry journal) – Every reading assignment must be accompanied by an entry in the student’s reading journal which will include passages from the reading assignment and the student’s opinions, feelings and ideas.

2. Final Writing Project – Near the end of the semester, each student will submit a writing project that includes writing that the student has written, revised and edited during the semester.

3. Freewriting/Journal – At various times during the semester the student will be asked to make entries in a freewriting journal.

4. Mid-Term and Final Exam – There will be two in-class composition exams, at the middle and the end of the semester. These are departmental exams and they will be read and graded by two instructors in the Bilingual Department.

5. Reading Quizzes and Exams – Each student is required to read completely each of the two novels assigned for this class. We will have occasional quizzes and exams to ensure that students are reading and comprehending these books.

6. Homework assignments – Students must complete and submit all homework assignments on time, and submit a course portfolio of original written work before the end of the semester. If you should be absent for any reason, you are expected to bring all homework assignments to the next class you attend. Each student should have the phone number of three other students who they may call for the assignments. I will check homework on a daily basis and lack of homework could seriously affect your grade.

7. Class participation – Students must be prepared to participate in class discussions, and be prepared to discuss assigned readings and other homework assignments.
