DA Calendar

Next club meeting is Monday, November 25, 2002.

Several members will be presenting topics including: Tank Valves, Nitrox Computers, Dive Lights, and a report from Rich M, Ben, and Mike about their exploits in St Thomas, USVI.

Equipment Maintenance Workshop

We will hold our DA Fifth Annual Equipment Maintenance Workshop at The Great Notch Fire House, Little Falls, NJ on Sunday, November 17 at 2PM. Thanks again to Ian Fryer for procuring the firehouse for our use. We will demonstrate various self maintenance techniques to our members so their gear can be cleaned, lubricated, and made ready for storage or ready for continued diving use. Bring any gear that you have that may need self-service. This includes regs, BCD’s, suits, lights, knives, masks, snorkels, fins, tanks, drysuits, zippers, patch materials, computers, anything! Several members know how to service their gear and will be willing to demo and assist others. We may have experience that you need. We will not be doing any annual reg service that should be done by factory service techs. We can show you how to prolong the good life of your gear though.

Bring: soap, vinegar, silicone lube and spray, brushes, pails, tools, batteries, towels, plastic table covers, and any gear you have. Though we clean the firehouse before we leave, we usually have a lot of good sloppy fun during the workshop!

DA will supply pizza and soda.

Directions: Eastbound Rt 46 past Scuba Network, Little Falls: Take second exit off Rt 46, and bear right. Continue past train station on left and bear left at traffic signal, over RR Bridge and look for Great Notch Firehouse on right after bridge.

Westbound from Rt 3 merge with Rt 46 Little Falls: Go past Valley Road exit and take next exit (after Great Notch Inn). Bear left over Rt 46 onto Notch Road past RR station and then bear left at traffic signal. Proceed over bridge and look for firehouse on right.

Dan Lieb’s Presentation

Dan Lieb, president of the NJHDA, New Jersey Historical Divers Association, came to Divers Anonymous on October 28 to present various topics of interest to our members. He began by discussing the purpose of the NJHDA, which is to research and document wreck sites off our NJ coastline, establish a shipwreck museum, open its archives for public use, and encourage user artifact restoration, research, and publication.

Dan spent over an hour letting our members know what he and the other board members are investigating, without giving out any specific dive site information. He also detailed how interested parties can go about doing research to identify currently unidentified shipwrecks.

Dan is a very enthusiastic wreck researcher, and his presentation though long in time, kept all of the DA members’ attention throughout. All present enjoyed the evening. We hope the NJHDA is successful in achieving its goals, and DA will be assisting in whatever way DA can help.

Several of our DA members are subscribing members of the NJHDA. As a subscribing member you will receive 4 copies of the NJHDA Journal, and have access to the archives currently stored at the NOAA building in Sandy Hook.  To become a subscribing member, send a check for $15 made out to NJHDA to:

Peggy’s News

From Marie Levine of Shark Research Institute:

- - -

Hi Whale shark lovers!

CITIES  (Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species) is less than two weeks away and there will be a referendum to consider adding Whale sharks and Basking sharks to the international endangered species list.  This will help to reduce the slaughter of these sharks around the world.

The Shark Research Institute will be at CITES, lobbying for protection. A German website is gathering signatures on a petition to be presented there.  I hope you will consider going to this website to add your name to their petition.  The more names they have in support, the more sway they will have.  This site has some disturbing and sad photographs of whale sharks being killed in the Philippines.

http://www.taucher.net/walhai/u_protest.html

Whale sharks and Basking sharks are slow to mature and reproduce. They are being killed around the world at a rate that is unsustainable.  Everyone who loves to swim with and admire these large and gentle animals has an interest in protecting them.

DA Dive Log

Shore Dive Log

Shore Dives: Tom, Rich M, Ian, Carlos, Ash, and Diego did some intro to NE diving at Sandy Hook’s Horseshoe Cove on October 27. This was supposed to be the Halloween Dive, but Ian was the only DA to show up with a pumpkin. Maybe next year will bring more support for this highly skilled underwater endeavor. The group did a tour of the Cove during pre-high slack. Vis was a good 6 feet and temps were in the 48 to 52 degree range. There was still marine life to be observed, and some crusty bottles were recovered.

After that dive, the group was joined by Ben, Mike, and Jamie. They didn’t bring their pumpkins either. Everyone went upstream on the Shrewsbury River and did a high slack-outgoing current drift dive. Lots of fun was had by all, and a quick bite was grabbed at the Yellow Rose after the dive.

Boat Dive Log

Members of Divers Anonymous, Chris, Christine, and Laura were on the “John Jack” on Saturday, September 28. Chris Rollins enjoyed the dive on this dive boat and here is his report.

Three members of DA partook in some diving this weekend on

The John Jack out of Staten Island NY: Chris Rollins, Laura and Christine Menville. Saturday departure at 6.00 AM, to dive a little dove, fully intact barge. Water temps were outstanding at a max depth of 89 feet. Vis was OK at about 5 to 15 feet. Bugs were everywhere. Even myself Chris R., who stinks at bug catching, brought back three 2-pounders and one 4-pounder. We were the only passengers on the boat. Seas were rough, starting at 2 to 3 and building to 8 to 10s. I would recommend this boat to everyone in the ny/nj/pa/ct area; it is outstanding. New boat,

Excellent captain, great crew; give it a try! You'll have a great time.

Sunday October 27: Connie and Leo Mazur went out on the Sea Lion for a fun day of diving in fairly calm seas. The Vis was not too good, but the water temp was still very acceptable. The divers reported that their only complaint was that there is no protection from the elements on the Sea Lion, but the crew and captain did a good job, and all had a good day.

DA Dive Plan

Shore Dives: Sunday, November 10, some DA’s will be trying to find the Elberon Wreck off of the Elberon Jetty System. Contact Tom for information.

Contact Tom if you are interested in diving any Sunday at various sites throughout the area depending on water and weather conditions. If the air temp is above 40, some of us will be diving!

Boat Dives:

At this time of the year, we don’t have any planned boat dives. Mid fall diving can be spotty, and the weather is totally unpredictable. We urge members to pick days that are good ones and head for any open boat you can find that’s going to a destination you are comfortable with.

We will be putting together plans for next year’s boat diving very soon, bring your ideas to our next meeting.

Boat Diving Requirements

Everyone please be advised that the following are required by Tom and Ben to dive on any of their charters:

1)      Standard NAUI Waiver and Release signed before boarding naming Tom Gormley and Ben Gualano as Instructors and Divemasters.

2)      Logbook indicating northeast boat diving experience or arrangements to do guided dive with Tom or Ben.

3)      Pony bottle and regulator with pressure gauge or other suitable redundant gear.

4)      Compass, wreck reel, surface audible signaling device, and cutting device as well as other mandatory scuba gear.

5)      DAN or equivalent insurance.

6)      The Scuba Too leaves at 7AM. Don’t miss it. Plan to return by 3PM.

Holiday Party: Saturday, January 11, 2003

Al Nesterok has arranged to have our annual Holiday Party at the San Carlo on Saturday, January 11. We will ask Al to give us more details at our next meeting, but please keep your calendar open for this “not to be missed” evening of fun, food, prizes and entertainment. Norva and Jamie have already volunteered to assist Al in organizing this event. If you wish to provide more assistance, please contact any of these members.

The cost of the party will be approximately $30. The club will probably subsidize the remainder of the cost. This has to be discussed and approved by the membership at our next regular meeting.

Please bring a payment of $30 for each person in your party who you plan to have attend. The committee will be collecting payment at the November meeting and will try to have the plans and collections complete by our December meeting.

Ear Care Part 3

In previous segments of this series the significance of equalizing as a method to protect the ears was explored. This topic was followed by a DAN article on how to reduce the occurrence of external ear infections. This month we will explore the use of corrective mouthpieces to reduce jaw fatigue. Believe it or not, jaw fatigue developed by clenching on your mouthpiece can lead to muscle tension that manifests itself as ear pain. This condition is popularly known as TMJ syndrome. The way to correct this problem is to place a special mouthpiece on your regulator. We can further demonstrate how to apply one of these mouthpieces to your regulator at our upcoming equipment maintenance workshop on November 17. Bring your regs and a new mouthpiece to the workshop, and we will show you how to fit and place it correctly. You need to visit your local dive shop to pick up the appropriate orthotic mouthpiece for your specific reg.

Here is an excerpt from a website article by Karen Carmichael (Otago, NZ) describing various scuba diving effects on the body’s musculoskeletal system. Visit her site at:

http://physiotherapy.curtin.edu.au/community/educational_resources/ep652_00/scuba.html - phy

Another musculoskeletal problem that appears to be associated with scuba diving is temporomandibular joint dysfunction (TMJD). Hobson (1991) suggests that TMJD may be due to either an occlusion imbalance or over-exertion of the joint and muscles, resulting in pain. It has been suggested that the use of a diving mouthpiece can result in local inflammation of the TMJ. Hobson (1991) found that mouthpieces examined, exacerbated, pre-existing TMJ pain in most cases. This is important because TMJD while being uncomfortable may also be a precursor to middle ear problems, giving vertigo and disorientation, potentially hazardous conditions while diving. Hobson (1996) went on to look at mouthpieces and airways efficiency. He found that a mouthpiece with an interdental bite platform of 4mm gave the greatest comfort, along with the most efficient airway.”

President’s Report / Tom Gormley

Reported on October’s various club and shore dive activities. Connie and Leo dove aboard the Sea Lion on Oct 28, while various other club members and a few student did 2 shore dives at Sandy Hook.  Ian was the only one to show up with a pumpkin so we did not hold pumpkin carving contest this year.  Chris is still busy diving aboard various dive boats building up experience for more challenging technical diving.  The water conditions are still good for a few more dives in November.

Tom requested members to consider dive and other social activities to be presented for consideration for next year’s planned activities.

Nov 17 we will hold our Annual Equipment Cleaning & Maintenance Workshop to be held at Ian’s Firehouse in Little Falls starting at 1:00 p.m.  This is not a substitute for normal recommended annual servicing of critical scuba equipment.  Club will provide free drinks and pizza.

Nov 25 club meeting will have presentation about scuba tank values, dive lights and nitrox computer.

Special Committees Reports

Local Dive Committee  / Ben and Tom

Scuba II is up for sale and will be replaced with Spring Tide.  John from Northeast Scuba advised Tom and Ben can charter the faster and nicer Spring Tide for 6~7 divers at same cost as last year.

Chris asked if anyone would be interested in joining him to charter John Jack located in Staten Island for some other location wreck diving including opportunity for some technical diving.  Tom advised Chris that other members who charter boats for diving do so at their own responsibility. Divers Anonymous does not procure boats for club diving, but individual members can recruit divers to go with them on personal charters. Chris agreed to persue the charters realizing the personal responsibility. Mike commented that he would be interested in diving this boat if the sites were acceptable.

Ian is thinking about putting together a few charter boat trips for next season.

If interested, contact the above members to plan and reserve dive spots for 2003 season.

Membership Committee / Tom Gormley

No news to report this month.

T-Shirt Committee  / Ian Fryer & Jamie Cacciatore

Ian still has some embroider T-shirts available for $24 in limited colors and embroider hats for $20.

Jamie still has some silk-screened cotton colored T-shirts for $14 and sweatshirts for $20.

Travel Committee / Norva Gormley

Rick asked if anyone would be interested in joining him for weekend of skiing in February. The location is Bellayre Mountain in NY State off the Thruway. Depending on the number of participants, Rick may be able to get discount tickets. Please see Rick for details.

Al is thinking about putting together a dive outing in 2003 to visit Lake Champlagne.  This location is famous for clear cold water with lots of great wrecks.

Fred asked if anyone would be interested in visiting historical battleship NJ located in Camden, NJ.  Tom requested he look into details and report back his findings at next meeting.  We are looking for outings to pass the colder northeast slow dive season. Anyone with ideas to discuss can bring them to future meetings. Last year we visited the NY Aquarium and had a good time. Previous outings included the NJ State Aquarium in Camden.
