Ocean Wreck Divers Flea Market Report

Several DA members showed up at the Ocean Wreck Divers Flea Market in February including: Don Wilson who picked up a nice pair of steel 120 cuft tanks, Al Nesterok sold some cutting shears and gave away his helium tanks, Rich Mullen who sold a nice pair of steel 120 cuft tanks. Ian Fryer sold some gear, Maurizia Corrao toured the tables, Rich Bollero and Greg Collucci experienced their first market, Norva knitted, Angela tried to sell her army boots, and Tom picked up some gear for his inflatable and sold some books. All of us handed out club flyers to some interested divers. Everyone had a good time, and look forward to next years event.

Rich, Tom, Angela, and Frank went to the Shark River after the market and had a nice cold water dive. Angela’s dive in a wetsuit was just a bit colder than the others.

Peggy’s News

1. Spearfishing Problem

We all have to write letters on this problem. The Dive Council fought for spearfishing being allowable fishing gear - for hire dive boats need to be allowed to let their customers spearfish! Write your Senators (Corzine & Lautenberg), your Congressman & other elected officials and Pat Kurkul (below) NOW! This is a Federal Fishery Ruling that impacts those that have a Federal Permit. Peggy
- - -
From Marty Dick...

I could really use your help. There is a federal regulation that makes
no sense, is hurtful to the poor and middle class, and negatively
impacts the New Jersey economy.
If you are wealthy enough to own your own boat, you can spearfish for
most every species. But, if you are a spearfisherman who cannot afford
your own boat, and you go on a dive charter or party boat, you are
severely restricted in the fish you can shoot.

New Jersey, a coastal state, has an active diving industry, with dive
boats, dive shops, dive schools and dive-equipment manufacturers. It is
a bigger industry than most people realize. New Jersey divers buy
equipment, courses and gasoline, and they pay dive boats, motels, delis
and instructors. It adds up. Diving is very expensive.

And a major attraction of dive party and charter boats is spearfishing.
Furthermore, the number of actual fish taken by spearfishermen in New
Jersey
is so small that it has no significant effect on any fishery.

For more information about this incredibly discriminatory regulation,
that works directly against our state and your constituents, please

2. Loss of Beach Dive Access

This is important for all divers to do - if we lose 1 access, more will follow - Write a letter- Peggy
- - - -
Through a combined effort of several Long Island Divers Association
(LIDA) members, we have drafted a letter to Helen Marshall, Queens
County Borough President, with respect to the possible imminent loss
of scuba access to Beach 9th Street in Far Rockaway. As you probably
know, it appears that the property is being purchased by or on behalf
of developers who may be trying to eliminate or restrict access to
scuba divers.  Beach 9th Street is unique, singular, and must be
preserved for diving in my opinion and that of many others.

The time to act is NOW. I have "pasted" a copy of a proposed letter
for you to consider.  The BEST thing would be for you to compose and
write your own letter.  However, if you wish, use and sign this one
or use it as a "model". Whatever you choose, PLEASE make sure to
personally sign the letter and give your address. Please sent this
letter or your own letter or modification to any other persons you
feel may be helpful, including your own local representatives, even
if not New York City based. All representatives need each other's help
in varying projects, so all can be helpful.  I have suggested Ms.
Marshall as being a person for all to write to initially as she has
already been helpful and seems sympathetic to the rights of divers at
this site.

PLEASE don't just let this pass by.  Forward the information on to
all divers on your e-mail lists and to anyone else you know who may
help and write a letter or pass this one on. If Beach 9th is lost
now, it will never be replaced.

PLEASE ACT NOW and pass this along to all.

Many thanks
Steve
(Steve is President of LIDA)

March     2004

Dear Ms. Marshall,

I am writing to you out of deep concern for the future of one of our City's most overlooked natural resources. Scuba diving access at the Almost Paradise shore diving site on Beach 9th Street in Far Rockaway, Queens is faced with extinction. This threat must be halted and I seek your help before the destruction begins.

For over 40 years, this small strip of beach has been the ONLY reasonably accessible shore-based scuba diving site available in
the entire City. Its unique topography and underwater community can be demonstrated to the non-scuba diver by the thousands of photographs taken every year at this site, or by simply speaking with anyone who dives this natural treasure at Beach 9th Street. It is an incredibly beautiful, accessible, and safe scuba diving site, unique to the City and probably the entire Northeast coast.

This one of a kind site serves as a natural training and recreational area for thousands of New Yorkers. Scuba divers of all
levels of experience, including instructors and their students,
certified recreational divers, rescue divers from the public and
private sectors, oceanography students, biologists, and professional
and amateur underwater photographers have utilized Beach 9th Street for decades. The loss of this access would, in reality mean the loss of recreational scuba diving to the City of New York.

The potential for habitat destruction due to unrestricted
development in this most unique area would be devastating. Hundreds
of underwater species dwell in and breed at this site. The unique
underwater topography, tides, currents and bottom habitat all combine to make this one of a kind natural treasure. Access to Beach 9th
Street
must be preserved.

As a representative of the people, you have a responsibility
to halt this potential devastation before it begins. Once Beach 9th
Street
is compromised or lost, it can never be replaced. Responsible
development, which preserves scuba access and the underwater habitat,
is possible with proper planning. However, loss of this natural
resource to the people of the City by poor planning or lack of
preservation of scuba diving access and protection of the underwater
environment cannot be permitted. I urge you to do all you can to protect this small, unique and irreplaceable section of our City. It is your obligation to do all that is possible to prevent this destructive tragedy from happening.

Thank you for your anticipated prompt and effective action.

Very truly yours,

SIGNED

DA Dive Log

Angela, Frank, Tom, and Rich did a dive on leap year day in the Shark River Inlet, Belmar, NJ. The water temperature was around 38 degrees and the air temperature was around 55 degrees. These conditions made for a very nice afternoon dive. Angela deserves a pat on the back for doing her dive in a wetsuit. Her new drysuit has not yet arrived, but this didn’t stop her. The water was clear providing 10 feet of vis. Many crabs were spotted and Tom saw a small winter flounder. Other divers saw several small shrimp as well as the other year round residents of the inlet. A good dive was had by all.

Tom, Norva, and Greg went on to visit DA member Garth who is in the VA Hospital recovering from some injuries. The others went for a nice local dinner of seafood.

Al and Tom dove the Manasquan River RR Bridge on a cool Sunday morning, March 7. The vis was good around 8 to 10 feet, but the water temperature had a setback. It was only 36 degrees. That didn’t stop Al and Tom who had at least a 30 minute dive around the bridge and the river. Angela and Norva provided shore support and the group went on the Atlantis Diner for a hearty post dive breakfast.

Mike Lacatena, Ben Gualano, Rich Mullen and dive buddy Ed went to the US Virgin Islands for some intense diving in the clear warm tropical waters. Rich said he did 30 dives in the 11 days they were there. Their exploits included the St Croix wall and several reefs and piers. No treasure was found, but the group has plenty of stories to tell. Rich found a couple of bottles he might bring to the next meeting for show and tell.

Members: Gary Mullen, Paul Ward, and Gary P went to South Carolina for some alligator diving and shark tooth hunting in the Cooper River. We are hoping to have them show off some mighty old large shark teeth, “megalodon” at our next meeting. They were hoping that the alligators were sluggish in the cool winter water. Let’s hear the story.

DA Dive Plan

Tom and Rich plan to dive this coming Saturday afternoon, March 27. Their destination may be in Sandy Hook, but it depends on the weather and marine forecast.  Anyone who wants to join them should email Tom or Rich to let them know you plan to join the fun.

Contact Tom or Rich if you are interested in diving any Sunday or Thursday at various sites throughout the area depending on water and weather conditions.

Boat Dives: Tom and Ben plan to personally charter the Spring Tide out of Brielle for dives in 2004. Tom’s dates are posted on his site www.safescuba.com These dates are open to club members as well as Tom’s students so contact Tom or Ben for information about their dives. The sign up date will be our February and March 2004 meetings. Bring $60 for each dive trip you wish to make.

Tom’s boat dive dates are:

Boat Dives: Sundays: May 02, June 6, and August 15, 2004

Other club members have indicated that they will be arranging charters. As dates are set, they will be added to the calendar.
