DA Dive Log

Shore Dive Log

Shore Dives: Tom, Rich M, Al, Ben and Frank M dove at the Shrewsbury River on December 29. The weather was decent for late December. Air temperatures were in the mid forties and it was partly sunny. The group was trying to do a search and recovery of some lost equipment from the previous week. The water conditions turned out to be a bit cooler than the previous week’s diving. The water temperature had dipped to 33 degrees depending on whose gauge was used. Some gauges even read lower if you can believe that. The big problem was that the tide was low and that meant that visibility was poor. It was around 2 feet. The outgoing tide had contributed to the colder water as well. The group did a sweep on the dive flag line, but the gear was not spotted. After the sweep the divers decided to look for some artifacts on their way back to shore, but nothing of significance was recovered.  As soon as the divers can get together again, they will do another search for the missing gear. Ben was successful in trying out his newly acquired full-face mask.

Boat Dive Log

No boat dives were logged since the last report.

Minutes of DA meeting, 12-16-2002, Mario’s Restaurant, Clifton, N.J.

Meeting called to order by Tom G 19:40 Hours.

Tom asked for a motion to accept the minutes from the last meeting as those listed in the DA Newsletter and on the website. Chris made the motion and Leo seconded it.

Al- VP’s report- that Lakeland Diver’s announced that on 12-18-2002 there will be sale, and many items are 50% off, refreshments and food to be served 7-10 pm, and prizes to be given out.

Tom- President's report- attendance sheet passed around, statement made that on the 01-27-2003 meeting there will be a marine historian on hand to give a presentation and slide show.

On 01-14-2003 there will be a nitrox class starting in Belleville.

Tom requested that the club subsidizing of $ for the D/A holiday party. His suggestion was for the club to pay up to $250.00 towards prizes and incidentals, and he was looking for any other suggestions.    Motion made by Charlie for the club to approve up to $250 for holiday party expenditures and seconded by Ben. A vote was taken and approved by all present except Ian. Holiday party planning committee meeting to be set and held at a time and date to be determined by the committee.

Tom requested that any gifts available for party gifts should be brought to the party. Gift items could include any new or good condition dive gear. He noted that Rich has already given incidentals to the party and Al, Rich, and Ben have arranged other interesting items.

Tom acknowledged the rescue off Long Branch and the e-mails, which he received and noted. Comments, which he received, suggested a boat dive safety forum for March 03 meeting. He hopes that no D/A members would be involved in such a rescue incident. Comments and points, which were brought up, were that each diver should have some type of dive alert- whistle- loud lasting sound and a safety sausage. These devices aid personnel to spot a diver on the surface. A spotter in charge of divers should be on board to insure the return of all divers. This would aid in spotting a diver who does not come up the anchor line or drifts away from a boat. Other suggestions made were that he should have sent up his lift bag before freeing grappling-anchor line. Be aware of task overloading, and the rough seas- 5’ waves. Attendees commented that divers should spend more on safety gear. Tom noted that member, Don Wilson carries a personal EPIRB unit on his BCD and Chris R stated that he carries a flare with his gear as well as the other safety items. Tom commented on the boat used in the incident that the boat is very well equipped with a large o2 tank and 30 foot supply hose, 2 vhf radios, lines, lights, and a back board for removing injured divers from the water. He also commended the boat operators for their promptness in calling the coast guard to the scene.

Tom- made note of tonight’s photo and artifact contest to be held after the meeting.

Al- stated that $ is due for the holiday party so he can have a head count. Committee will decide on the entrée for the evening.  The cost will be $22.00 for members and $32.00 for non-members. The party will be on 01-11-03. Last years party’s cost was just over 900.00.

Mike asked why the club does not pay for the party completely. Tom responded that the club uses approximately 60% of each members dues to pay for the party and that the other part of the dues is used to pay for the other events put on by the club like the Memorial day picnic, DA weekend at Dutch Springs, the Labor Day picnic, prizes like tonight’s contest. The $25 collected for dues each year can’t cover the cost of the party, which is around $35 to 40 per person. Spreading the club’s money around to many events gives many members the opportunity to benefit from the club’s treasury and receive a return for their dues payment. Mike appeared satisfied with Tom’s reply and no further comments were made.

Tom requested that the meeting be adjourned at 20:17 hours, Ben made that motion and Al seconded it.

Meeting adjourned.

Numerous photos and artifacts were presented by members: Jamie, Ben, Al, Ian, Tom, Mike, and Paul. Everyone enjoyed the stories and artifacts. Ian, Ben, and Paul received some nice prizes for their entries according to the judges.

Next club meeting is Monday, December 16, 2002.

Minutes submitted by Secretary, Richard Mullen and recorded by Charlie Padula
