So that we can have some fun with gift giving at the party, we are collecting donations of suitable items from members to be used as gifts during the party. So far we have collected 3 gifts from outside parties and the club has purchased at least 2 more. Please bring suitable donated gift items to Rich at the next meeting. Some of these items may be raffled at an auction conducted by Rich during the party. Pre-Dive Medications May Put Scuba Divers at Risk
Wed Nov 27,10:32 AM ET
By Marilyn Bitomsky

MELBOURNE (Reuters Health) - A survey of over 700 scuba divers in Australia and the United States has found that many put themselves at risk by taking medication just before a dive, although more research is needed to determine the exact level of risk they face.

The body processes medication differently in the high-pressure underwater environment, researchers from the Emergency Department of the Austin and Repatriation Medical Center and Royal Melbourne Hospital and the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center note. And the way some drugs are metabolized, they explain, could interfere with a person's fitness to dive.

Dr. Simone Taylor and her colleagues conducted a postal survey of 346 Australia and 363 US dive club members. Most were between the ages of 31 and 50, and had been diving for at least 8 years.

Although authorities recommend avoiding medications prior to scuba diving due to the potential for altered effects on the body in the underwater environment, this survey found divers were taking a variety of prescription and over-the-counter medications daily, including within 2 hours of diving.

Reporting the study at a conference of the Australasian College for Emergency Medicine, Taylor said one quarter of divers took medications daily. Almost 10% in this survey took medication for cardiac disease or hypertension (8.9%) and 2.8% took asthma medication.  Taylor was also surprised to find that 0.3% took medication for epilepsy and 0.7% took drugs for diabetes.

Many divers regularly took nasal decongestants and pseudoephedrine such as Sudafed within 2 hours of diving, and medication to prevent seasickness and barotrauma-injury caused by shifts in pressure, such as "the bends"--was also common.

She said some differences were noted between Australian and US divers, probably reflecting differences in the ages and state of health of the groups and also differences in availability of drugs.

For example, pseudoephedrine is sold only in pharmacies in Australia but can be

obtained in dive shops in the US.

DA Dive Log

Shore Dive Log

Shore Dives: Tom, Rich M, and Diego dove at the Shrewsbury River on November 24. The weather was fairly good for late in the fall. Temperatures were 51 degrees in the water and on land and the sun was out most of the day. Diego was trying out his new Mares reg and BCD, and Rich and Tom were hunting artifacts as usual. Diego enjoyed his new gear and the artifact hunters were happy with the results of their hunt also.

December 1, 2002 found Rich and Tom back in Sandy Hook on a sunny but cold December day. The winds were gale force so no boats were around. The two divers sought shelter from the NW winds by diving across from the twin lights. Tom was rewarded with a nice danforth anchor and Rich found a nice fruit jar. The divers agreed that the water was still good, but the wind chill after the dive made for a quick change out of the dry suit and into a warm truck. There was no thought of doing a second dive this day, but they enjoyed the dive in spite of the windy weather.

Boat Dive Log

Members of Divers Anonymous, Chris, Christine, and Laura were on the “John Jack” out of Staten Island, NY on Saturday, November 23. Chris Rollins reported that the trio enjoyed another dive on this dive boat, which they are finding comfortable, convenient, and accessible to different wrecks than the ones visited by the Jersey dive boats. Chris says “excellent captain, great crew; give it a try! You'll have a great time.”

Sunday November 24 Ian Fryer went out on the Sea Lion for a fun day of diving in fairly calm seas on the wreck of the Delaware. Vis was good and bottom temperatures were around 54 degrees. The dive was kept to the inshore area due to choppy seas further out. Ian found an iron spike on the wreck and will be restoring it carefully. He reported that the crew and captain did a good job, and all had a good day.

DA Dive Plan

Shore Dives: Sunday, December 8, some DA’s are considering a trip to Havre De Grace, MD for some artifact hunting. Contact Tom or Rich for information.

Contact Tom if you are interested in diving any Sunday at various sites throughout the area depending on water and weather conditions. If the air temp is above 40, some of us will be diving!

Boat Dives:

At this time of the year, we don’t have any planned boat dives. Late fall diving can be spotty, and the weather is totally unpredictable. We urge members to pick days that are good ones and head for any open boat you can find that’s going to a destination you are comfortable with.

We will be putting together plans for next year’s boat diving very soon, bring your ideas to our next meeting.

Boat Diving Requirements

Everyone please be advised that the following are required by Tom and Ben to dive on any of their charters:

1)      Standard NAUI Waiver and Release signed before boarding naming Tom Gormley and Ben Gualano as Instructors and Divemasters.

2)      Logbook indicating northeast boat diving experience or arrangements to do guided dive with Tom or Ben.

3)      Pony bottle and regulator with pressure gauge or other suitable redundant gear.

4)      Compass, wreck reel, surface audible signaling device, and cutting device as well as other mandatory scuba gear.

5)      DAN or equivalent insurance.
