Yassir Arafat is dead, and I mourn for the fact that it was a peaceful death free from much pain. This shouldn’t have happened! He should have been hung like the Nazi leaders at Nuremberg. People remember him as a great leader. I remember him as someone who has reinvigorated anti-Semitism on a scale not seen since the Third Reich.
Yet people mourn. As Arafat was brought to his resting site people swamped his grave, two people were hurt in the crush. Here’s a comment that I think expresses the whole situation about everything from the Palestinian situation to the funerals chaotic nature.
Do these people deserve a democratic state? Yes. Can they handle it? No, I don’t think so. We’re talking about a people that have to learn to red the Koran in Arabic (and most can’t) so they listen to what the Mullahs say, “knowing” it’s true. This is a people that stone women to death for mundane infractions. This is a people who fire guns in the air during crowded festivals.
I’m glad Arafats dead. Maybe they can actually have peace, though I doubt groups like the PLO and Islamic Jihad would let something like peace get in the way of their business of terror.
