Mounting the engine and cowl

Jan 19 2003

While all the wing stuff is going on, I started looking at cowl mounting options, etc.

There are some questions below -
2 questions about the motor mount itself and the way the engine mounts to it
1 series of questions about the amount of clearance needed between the cowl and the engine.

This is a 140FZ - and to get it into the motor mount I had to spread the motor mount beams about 1/4 - that doesn't sound wonderful to have the motor mount beams clamp on the sides of the crankcase.

I'm concerned about the amount of clearance between the engine and the cowl. Looks like less than 1/4" around the left and rigt sides.

  1. It's clear that the area around the exhaust will have to be relieved (cross hatched and dotted areas on the exhaust side on the lower pics)

  2. With this style mount, will up and down and sideways translation (as opposed to rotation) be a problem as it is on a Hyde mount? I've never seen/ used one of these before -

  3. If I increase the clearance by much, the sides of the cowl will lose a lot of material around the engine since we're into the sides of the cowl now.

but...

I have no experience with this style motor mount, so I defer to the owner - how much clearance should there be between the engine and the cowl?
