What Does The Bible Say?

Many people seem to think that the Bible has nothing to say about abortion or unborn children. Many also believe that God could care less about a fetus. True, the Bible never specifically says abortion is wrong, but it does say that He creates and cherishes all life. Sorry, pro-abortionists--God does care about a fetus. The following Scripture verses prove that God is indeed concerned about the unborn.

God created every human being on the face of this earth in His image, and He knew us when we were inside our mother's body and even before we were conceived:

So God created in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them. -Genesis 1:27

For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother's womb. I praise you for I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well. My frame was not hidden from you when I was made in the secret place. When I was woven together in the depths of the earth, your eyes saw my unformed body. All the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be. -Psalm 139:14-16

Listen to me, O house of Jacob, all you who remain of the house of Israel, you whom I have upheld since you were conceived, and have carried since your birth. -Isaiah 46:3

The Lord answered his prayer, and his wife Rebekah became pregnant. The babies jostled each other within her, and she said, "Why is this happening to me?" So she went to inquire the Lord. The Lord said to her, "Two nations are in your womb, and two peoples from within you will be separated; one people will be stronger than the other, and the older will serve the younger." When the time came for her to give birth, there were twin boys in her womb. -Genesis 25:21-24

In the womb he grasped his brother's heel; as a man he struggled with God. -Hosea 12:3

Sons are a heritage from the Lord, children a reward from him. -Psalm 127:3

...Now choose life, so that your children may live...-Deuteronomy 30:19

Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I set you apart; I appointed you as a prophet to the nations. -Jeremiah 1:5

As you do not know the path of the wind, or how the body is formed in a mother's womb, so you cannot understand the work of God, the Maker of all things. -Ecclesiastes 11:9

Yet you brought me out of the womb; you made me trust you even at my mother's breast. From birth I was cast upon you, from my mother's womb you have been my God. -Psalm 22:9-10

Surely I was sinful at birth, sinful from the time my mother conceived me. -Psalm 51:5

Did not he who made me in the womb make them? Did not the same one form us both within our mothers? -Job 31:15

This is what the Lord says- he who made you, formed you in the womb, and who will help you: Do not be afraid, O Jacob, my servant Jeshurun, whom I have chosen. -Isaiah 44:2

Before I was born the Lord called me; from my birth he has made mention of my name. -Isaiah 49:1

And now the Lord says- he who formed me in the womb to be his servant to bring Jacob back to him...-Isaiah 49:5

Yet, O Lord, you are our Father. We are the clay, you are the potter, we are all the work of your hands. -Isaiah 64:8

The Bible even speaks of when Jesus and John the Baptist were unborn children:

When Elizabeth heard Mary's greeting, the baby leaped in her womb, and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit. In a loud voice she proclaimed: "Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the child you will bear! But why am I so favored, that the mother of my Lord should come to me? As soon as the sound of your greeting reached my ears, the baby in my womb leaped for joy." -Luke 1:41-44

God's Word also makes it quite clear that He hates abortion:

There are six things that the Lord hates, seven that are detestable to him: haughty eyes, a lying tongue, hands that shed innocent blood, a heart that devises wicked schemes, feet that are quick to rush into evil, a false witness who pours out lies and a man who stirs up dissension among brothers. -Proverbs 6:16-19

This is what the Lord says: "For three sins of Ammon, even for four, I will not turn back my wrath. Because he ripped open the bellies of pregnant women of Gilead in order to extend his borders, I will set fire to the walls of Rabbah..." --Amos 1:13

They shed innocent blood, the blood of their sons and daughters, whom they sacrificed to the idols of Canaan, and the land was desecrated by their blood. -Psalm 106:38

God also wants us to speak up for those who can't. He wants us to stand up for the innocent. What could be more innocent than an unborn baby?

Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves, for the rights of all who are destitute. - Proverbs 31:8

Rescue those being led away to death; hold back those staggering toward slaughter. -Proverbs 24:11

Defend the cause of the weak and fatherless; maintain the rights of the poor and oppressed. Rescue the weak and the needy; deliver them from the hand of the wicked. -Psalm 82:3-4

These verses could also be applied to "hard cases" of the abortion issue--like rape, incest, or fetal birth defects.

Fathers shall not be put to death for their children, nor children put to death for their fathers; each is to die for his own sin. -Deuteronomy 24:16

...Who makes him deaf or mute? Who gives him sight and makes him blind? Is it not I, the Lord?...-Exodus 4:11

And the one that's the simplest of all:

Thou shall not kill. -Exodus 20:13
