The True Story of the Miracle of LittleBits

This is a true story of not only a precious kitten nicknamed Littlebits but of the mercy and graciousness of Almighty God who loves all His creation; not just human beings.

The Beginning of the Story

It was springtime of 1999 and I received a call from my co-worker Maggie informing me that I had become a grandmother. She wasn’t referring to any human descendant I had just acquired but meant that the stray cat we had fed and monitored for months had just given birth .

The stray cat was a black cat we called ,simply, MomCat and although we had fed her and treated her with kindness for almost a year, she was still very cautious of us and never allowed anyone near her. This was sad because this was her second litter. We would have liked to have her spayed and adopted into a loving home.

We didn’t see much of the kittens because MomCat kept them under the office porch . Maggie and Ines, searched with a flashlight and found them. There were 3 it seemed and like MomCat’s previous litter were mostly black.

MomCat. She never let us get too close

Weeks went by and we didn’t see the kittens. We saw MomCat, two of her previous litter and the other strays but no kittens.

We saw the others but no kittens.

In May of 1999 I was driving into the office parking lot when I saw a tiny black kitten with white boots and mittens on the front steps. I stopped and got out of my car and took a closer look. He was tiny, scruffy and obviously hungry. I approached and he slowly walked away, like he was weak. When I tried to pick him up he jumped back under the porch. But that one quick glimpse was all it took: I was in love.

The Rescue

Angels of the rescue: Maggie and Ines

I told Ines and Maggie about it and how much I wanted to take the kitten in. They captured  him the next day and I took him home. I already had two kittens at home adopted from a shelter 7 months ago, Daphne and Fraiser and I was not expecting to adopt a third but well, what can I say? I am a religious person who believes in the truth of the Catholic faith and I believe St. Francis of Assisi has interceded for me on many, many occasions for the sake of animals. In return, he sends animals in trouble to me . This was one of St. Francis’ hardship cases, I was certain.

You will have men who deal likewise

With their fellow men.

God Laughs

He was really little, tiny in fact. He looked to be 4 weeks old but he must have been older. He was very scruffy and he tried to be ferocious by hissing but it wasn’t too convincing. He seemed weak. He was definitely hungry. I didn’t even know if he was a boy or a girl. He was so little that a temporary name naturally came to me:

                         " LittleBits  "

Because of his size and the presence of my other two cats I decided to keep him in a rabbit cage. He was fed special high protein kitten food and milk. He had a terrific appetite. He seemed to be okay; he even purred when I stuck my hand inside the cage to stroke him. Daphne and Fraiser were interested in him too and stared for hours at his cage. I made an appointment with my vet, Eileen Tucker DVM and was told to bring a stool sample. Okay, no problem…...I thought. His appointment wasn’t for 2 days. so I had plenty of time to collect a specimen. I

sifted through his litter box daily: nada. I placed him in a new litter box : nope. I had him sniff the litter box of the other cats to get into the mood: nothing was forthcoming. Oh well, I thought ,I would have to bring a stool sample later.

As I brought him into the vet I wasn’t nervous. I felt that he was healthy: he had a good appetite, he groomed himself, he liked to play and he was alert. The worse thing wrong with him would be fleas or earmites, that’s all.

Elizabeth Veterinary Clinic of Roselle                                   Eileen Tucker, DVM

Dr. Tucker noticed right away that something was wrong. When she felt his tiny belly she noticed that his intestines were swollen. When I told her I couldn’t collect a stool sample she gave him a brief massage and a litter box was brought in. The kitten went into the position to defecate but nothing came out. She felt his belly again and remarked, "He’s really backed up. We’ll have to do an enema." I

Immediately broke into a sweat. The idea of this teeny tiny kitten having an enema made me very nervous. Many years ago I came this close to fainting in front of another veterinarian who had inserted a thermometer into the rectum of another one of my cats causing the cat to screech and me to go pale and wobbly. Luckily for my ego, Dr. Tucker is a sensitive person and she suggested I go home while she and her staff administered the enema and also took a series of x-rays to determine the extent of the constipation. This was the first of many times I would leave my new kitten in medical care while I helplessly went home to worry and to pray.

Heavenly Father,

You created all things for your glory and made us stewards of this creation. If it is Your will, restore this animal to health and strength. Blessed are You Lord God, and Holy is Your name forever and ever. Amen.

What a Way to Start off Life

The news from Dr. Tucker was not good. The x-rays showed severe constipation. The enema had only been minimally helpful. She had never seen a kitten so "backed up". She thought it best to take him home , feed him a laxative, soft food and milk and maybe the problem would naturally resolve. I felt scared and crestfallen. I wasn’t counting on a sick kitten. Just the words "sick kitten" made me so incredibly sad. Animals are so purely innocent that it fills me with anguish to think of them suffering; baby animals only more so. I was glad to take him home though. I knew the enema could not have been pleasant and I just wanted to make him feel safe and comfortable.

Dr. Tucker was very sympathetic as she handed him back to me. "Poor little guy," she said, "What a way to start off life."
