Building a Mystery 10

Carlotta's Diner

Blair ducks away from a lunging Tea, and grins mischeviously as she dangles the key.
"Well, well. This must mean an awful lot to you."
Tea glares at Blair, her mind working furiously to come up with something, anything to get that key away from Blair.
Max strolls over. "Is there a problem here, ladies?"
"No problem, Max. Seems Ms. Delgado here wants something I have," Blair says coyly as she plays with the key.
Tea turns to Max, flashing a sexy smile. "The key is mine Max. Blair took it from my purse. I don't think it's too much to ask for her to give it back," she says, in a flirtatious tone.
Max gazes at her, obviously affected. Tea notices the angry look on Blair's face.
"Blair, what do you want some key for?" Max asks, moving closer to Blair as he notices the look on her face.
"Because Max, Tea wants it...that must mean something."
Tea glances at her watch, she has to get down to the station and work on that case for Hank. But she is not leaving without that key. An idea occurs to her.
"Alright Blair, you win. I'll tell you all about the key," Tea begins, eyeing her adversaries warily, "The key that you're holding is to my new office...and you're right, it is important to me. You see, without that key, I can't get into my office right now which means I can't work on the case Hank needs me to work on."
Blair eyes her, not sure whether to believe her.
Tea notices Blair wavering in and goes in for the kill. "Okay, let me make this simple Blair. You not giving me that key prevents me from working on a case, which means unless you hand it over I'll slap you with an obstruction of justice charge, and this time I will press charges," Tea says, glaring at Blair, praying Blair doesn't call her bluff.
Max looks at the two women and jumps in. "Blair, give Delgado the key. I don't have the money to bail you out."
Blair doesn't completely buy Tea's story, but hands over the key. Tea snatches the key away from Blair and holds it tightly in her hand. She then glares at them.
"Thank you," she says sarcastically, and turns to Max, "and DON'T call me 'Delgado'. If you feel the need to address me," she pauses, and backs away, looking at both Blair and Max, "you can call me Mrs. Manning." She turns and walks out, leaving Max and Blair staring after her, both confused and suspicious.
Tea feels a sense of relief as the afternoon air hits her. She clutches the key and holds it close to her heart.
"That was close, Querido. But no one is gonna take this away from me."

Dr. Jacobs' Office...

"Pete is the scariest one...he's the one I need to keep away from Starr, Tea, Viki...he would hurt them."
"You mentioned Pete the other day when you called. Something about your wife."
Todd's face fills with fear as he recalls the episode with Pete. "He wants to hurt Tea," he says softly.
"Hurt her how?"
Todd pauses. When he speaks, it is barely above a whisper. "Like he's hurt the others."
Dr. Jacobs stares at him intently. "Sexually?"
Todd nods his head, staring at his wedding ring. "I couldn't let him hurt her...I love her...and I want Tea so much...but its too dangerous...I'll die before I let Pete near her."
"And when Pete is fully integrated, will things change?"
Todd smiles, seeing Tea's beautiful face in his mind. "Oh yeah. I want a real marriage with Tea...and I'll do whatever I have to do to make that happen."

Tea's office

Tea wraps up her work for Hank and sits at her desk, exhausted. The last couple days had been very draining. She looks at her watch...11:30...was it that late already? She sighs and checks her messages. There is a message from Viki saying that she had made arrangements for their upcoming trip to Providence. Tea takes the key out of her purse. She holds it tightly in her hand, thinking about how close she had come to losing it earlier today. She would have to keep her eye on Blair. She really wishes this feud would end, she has so many more important things to deal with. Her mind automatically shifts to Todd. Despite everything, she loves him so much. He managed to reach in and touch a part of her that she didn't even know was there. She pictures his handsome face in her mind, thinking back to the way it felt when he kissed her. She closes her eyes at the wonderful memory.

Todd's room

Todd sits on his bed, staring straight ahead. His long hair is damp with sweat, and his head is spinning. He has just woken up from another nightmare. He had managed to regulate his breathing, but he was still scared...and alone. His thoughts drift back to the night Tea had talked him to sleep after a nightmare...the effect she had on him still amazed him. Todd impulsively picks up the phone and dials Tea's suite at the Palace, praying she would be there...he just needs to hear her voice. He hangs up when her machine clicks on. He decides to take a chance and see if she is still at work.

Tea is pulled from the memory of Todd's warm, insistent lips by her ringing phone.
"Who is calling here at this hour?" she wonders.

She picks up the phone. "Tea Delgado."
Todd's hand tightens around the phone.
"Hello?"
Todd closes his eyes, treasuring the sound of her voice.
"Who is this?"
Todd is kind of surprised Tea hasn't hung up yet. It takes all the control he has not to talk to her.
Tea is holding the silent phone. Her heart fills with hope and anxiety as a thought occurs to her.
"Todd? Todd, is that you?" she says softly, her voice filled with emotion.
Silence. Todd is shocked...how did she know?
"Todd, please, if this is you, please talk to me," she says, her voice breaking.
Todd wants to talk to her, wants to tell her where he is..wants to tell her how much he loves her. But...she has to come to him, to find him.
Todd softly hangs up the phone.
Tea stares at the phone, which is now buzzing with the dial tone. She feels a tear drip down her cheek.
"I love you, " she whispers.

Todd is holding Tea's picture, staring at those beautiful, brown eyes.
"I love you," he whispers.
