J.
Peter Gabriel Muhlenberg (1746-1807) is reputed to have
been the
first 'ordained' pastor of St. James (1769-1771). Peter
was a son of Henry Muhlenberg, one of the leading founders
of the Lutheran Church in America. Peter is mentioned in the
records of Pastor Schultz, who also may have shared duties
as the first 'ordained' pastor of St. James. Zion Church in
Oldwick, the oldest, continuous Lutheran congregation in NJ,
also claims Peter Muhlenberg as its first pastor.
