Kennywood's Famous Steel Phantom to be Removed

3/11/00

On March 4 Kennywood shocked coaster fans at ACE's CoasterBash in East Pittsburg by announcing that the Steel Phantom will be removed at the end of the 2000 season. Park officials stated that the Phantom is being removed because of the lack of space at Kennywood. There is still hope though, park chairman Carl Hughes said that they will be building a new coaster at Kennywood for the 2001 season.

The nine-year-old coaster was a favorite of coaster enthusiasts across the nation. Built by Arrow Dynamics, it was the first coaster over 200 feet (Steel Phantom is 225 ft.) to have inversions. The Steel Phantom is one of the fastest coasters in the world even today with a top speed of 80 mph. If you haven't ridden this classic make sure you try your best to get to Kennywood by the end of this season.
