The Pfautz Family

According to Eldson C. Smith, author of American Family Names (published by Harper & Row in 1973), the name "Pfau" is German and indicates "a dweller at the sight of the peacock; one thought to posses the characteristics of a peacock; dweller near swamp grass." I do not know if the name "Pfau" and "Pfautz" are the same.
Ancestors of this family have moved from: Germany and Austria to Switzerland, Kanton Aargau in the 15th century.
First Generation
A Johann Michael PFAUTZ, the Elder. He was b. c1650 in Rohrbach kris Sensheim, Rhenish Palatinate, Germany, where he was a mayor. He was Lutheran.
Second Generation
A1 Johnann (Hans) Michael PFAUTZ Sr., son of Johann Michael PFAUTZ the Elder, arrived in Philadelphia with his family aboard the "William and Sarah" on September 18, 1727 from Rotterdam.
Hans was born in about 1682 in Rohrbach kris Senshiem, Rhenish Palatinate, Germany. He died 2 February 1741/2 in Strasburg, Lancaster Co., PA. He is probably buried in the graveyard on Augustine WITHER's (WIDDER) plantation. He was a Lutheran innkeeper.
Hans married Ursula MUEHLENHAUSER on 10 February 1701/2 in Steinsfurt, Rhenish Palatinate, Germany. Ursula was born in about 1682 in Steinsfurt. She died 16 May 1772 in Strasburg, Lanc. Co., PA. She is buried in the graveyard on Augustine WITHER's plantation. She was German Reformed.
Hans Michael Sr. and Ursula had several children: Johann Michael Jr. (A11), Anna Margaretha (A12), Anna Barbara (A13), Hans Jacob (A14), Johannes (A15). Johann Andreas (A16) may also be a son. Hans Michael Sr. disowned his oldest son, Johann (Hans) Michael Jr. because he became a Dunker and did not remain a Lutheran.
Third Generation
A11 Johann (Hans) Michael PFAUTZ was disowned by his father. He was born 21 May 1709 in Rohrbach and was baptized in 1739 into the Dunker Sect. He died 21 March 1767 in Warwick, Lanc. Co., Pa. He is buried in the Middle Creek Cemetery. He served as a Bishop. Despite the common misconception that Hans married Catherine SCHLAUGH, he actually married Catherine NEFF (See NEFF A3) in 1733 in Lancaster County, PA. I will post an article on this matter later on. Catherine and her husband Hans Michael had four children: John Michael (A111), Catherine (A112), Jacob (A113), John (A114).
A12 Anna Margaretha PFAUTZ was born 19 June 1712 in Rohrbach kris Sensheim. She was married in 1732 to Augustine WITHERS. She died 22 January 1781.
A13 Anna Barbara PFAUTZ was born in 1714 in Steinsfurt. She was married on 23 June 1734 to Jacob HELLER (See HELLER). She died December 1790 in Leacock, Pa.
A14 Hans Jacob PFAUTZ was born 26 February 1716/7 in Rohrbach. He was married 22 November 1748 to Eva ECKMAN. He died 7 November 1800 in Strasburg, PA.
A15 Johannes (John 'Baron') PFAUTZ was born 9 March 1718/9 in Rohrbach. He was married in 1741 in Cumberland Co., Pa. to Anna KLEIN and Margaret BAST. He died July 1796 in Nippenose, Lycoming, Pa.
A16 (I am not sure if this was their son--if you know, please email me) Johann Andreas PFAUTZ was born 10 Feb. 1725/6 in Rohrbach. He died 1742 in Lanc. Co., Pa.
Fourth Generation
A111 John Michael PFAUTZ was born 13 September 1734 in Warwick, Pa. He was married in 1755 to Barbara GROMBACHER. He died in 1825 at Pipe Creek Waters, Frederick Co., Md.
A112 Catherine PFAUTZ was born 1736 in Warwick, PA. She married Peter GROMBACHER. She died in Virginia or Kentucky.
A113 Jacob PFAUTZ was born 22 January 1736/7 in Warwick, PA. He was married in 1763 to Mary BACH. Jacob died 23 January 1818 at Tarrs, Westmoreland Co., PA.
A114 John PFAUTZ was born 24 October 1745 in Warwick near Lititz, PA. He was married in 1767 to Mary MOHLER (See MOHLER A11). John died 24 March 1821 in Warwick, PA and he is buried in the Middle Creek Cemetery. He worshiped at the Conestoga Congregation in PA. Mary MOHLER and John PFAUTZ had ten children: Michael (A1141), Elizabeth (A1142), John Jr. (A1143), Henry Sr. (A1144), Jacob (A1145), Catherine (A1146), Samuel (A1147), Mary (A1148), Susanna (A1149), Christian (A1140).
Fifth Generation
A1141 Michael PFAUTZ was born in 1769 in Warwick, PA. He was married in 1795 to Susan FAHNESTOCK. Michael died in 1805 in Middletwon, Dauphin Co., PA
A1142 Elizabeth PFAUTZ was born 1771 in Warwick. She was married in 1795 to Samuel HELLER.
A1143 John M. PFAUTZ Jr.* was b. 4 Jan. 1772 near Lititz, PA. He was married in 1796 in Lancaster County to Elizabeth HELLER* (see HELLER A). She was born 29 May 1778 and died 26 Sept. 1864 in Warwick, PA. John d. 23 Dec. 1857 at Warwick. He is buried at the Middle Creek Cemetery.
In the 1850 census of Warwick Twp., Lancaster Co., John Pfautz and Elizabeth were listed as living with Louisa DIEHM, age 14. John's occupation was listed as "none" and his real estate valued at $8,200.
John and Elizabeth had several children: Joel (A11431), Anna/Nancy (A11432), Mary Heller (A11433), Lydia (A11434), John Jr. (A11435), Leah (A11436), Ephriam (A11437), Joseph* (A11438), and Daniel (A11439).
A1144 Henry PFAUTZ Sr. was born 23 March 1773 in Warwick, Lancaster Co., PA. He was married in 1798 to Nancy Ann GRAYBILL. Henry died 26 June 1827 in Washington, Franklin Co., PA.
A1145 Jacob PFAUTZ was born 16 September 1776 in Warwick. He was married 3 May 1803 to Elizabeth EBY. Jacob died 12 March 1864 at Conestoga Centre, Lanc. Co., PA.
A1146 Catherine PFAUTZ was born 15 Jun. 1777 in Warwick. She was married in 1802 to Joseph ROYER. She died 10 Nov. 1844.
A1147 Samuel PFAUTZ was born 30 July 1780 in Warwick. He was married in 1812 to Margaret SCHWAR. He died 18 February 1868.
A1148 Mary PFAUTZ* was born 5 Nov. 1783 in Warwick, PA. She was married in 1806 to Jacob GRAVER* (see GRAVER A). Mary died 5 Aug. 1848.
A1149 Susanna PFAUTZ was born in 1787 in Warwick, m. 12 Jun 1810 to John SENNET.
A1140 Christian PFAUTZ was born 3 Jan. 1790 in Warwick. He married Maria Elizabeth DUSHONG. He died 1 Nov. 1864 in N.E. Hagerstown, Washington Co., MD.

A11431 Joel PFAUTZ was b. 11 May 1797 in Warwick. He was m. 9 Mar. 1819 to Lydia A. ROYER and he d. 13 Nov. 1875 in Warwick, Pa.
A11432 Anna (aka Nancy) PFAUTZ was b. 20 May 1799 in Warwick. She was m. 1821 to John ROYER. Anna d. 10 Feb. 1882 in Lebanon Co., PA.
A11433 Mary Heller PFAUTZ was b. 8 Jan. 1801 in Warwick, Pa. She was m. 1822 to Jacob R. FRICK and she d. 14 Mar. 1869 in Lanc. Co., Pa.
A11434 Lydia PFAUTZ b. 17 Sep. 1803 in Warwick. She was m. 1825 to John GIBBEL. Lydia d. 24 Apr. 1823 at Trout Creek, Lanc. Co., PA.
A11435 John PFAUTZ Jr. was b. 19 Jan. 1806 in Warwick, m. 1836 to Mary ROYER, d. 25 Apr. 1885 at Warwick.
A11436 Leah PFAUTZ was b. 4 Nov. 1808 at Warwick. She was m. 1829 to John GIBBEL and she d. 5 Jun. 1891.
A11437 Ephriam PFAUTZ was b. 19 Aug. 1811 in Warwick. He m. 1833 to Anna (Nancy) GIBBEL and he d. Heidelberg, Lebanon Co., PA.
A11438 Joseph PFAUTZ b. 22 Aug. 1814 in Warwick, near Lititz, PA. He married Magdalena (aka Martha) GRAYBILL (see GRAYBILL A66) in 1837 in Lancaster County, PA. He died 17 Dec. 1894 in Warwick and is buried in the Middle Creek Cemetery. Joseph and Magdalena had four children: Hiram (A114381), Isaac G. (A114382), Elizabeth (A114383), and Mary (A114384).
Seventh Generation
A114381 Hiram PFAUTZ was b. 14 Apr. 1838 in Warwick and he m. in 1866 to Louise RISENER.
A114382 Isaac G. PFAUTZ was b. 24 Feb. 1841 in Warwick. He was married in 1860 to Maria L. MINNICH (see MINNICH A2341441). Isaac d. 31 May 1911 and he is buried in the Longenecker Cemetery. Their 10 children included: Ellen Mary (A1143821), Amanda (A1143822), Wellington (A1143823), Lizzie (A1143824), Mazie (A1143825), Isaac M. (A1143826), Joseph Barton (A1143827), Emma (A1143828), John (A1143829) and Charles A. (A1143820).
A114383 Elizabeth PFAUTZ was b. 4 Nov. 1849 in Warwick. She was m. in 1865 to Christian WENGER.
A114384 Mary PFAUTZ was b. 16 Jan. 1855 in Warwick. She m. in 1873 to Franklin HACKMAN.
A11439 Daniel PFAUTZ was b. 13 Aug. 1820 in Warwick. He m. 1856 to Barbara MEYER and he d. 5 Jun. 1859 in Warwick.
Eighth Generation
A1143823 Wellington PFAUTZ was born 27 Nov. 1864 in Warwick and married Elizabeth ENSMINGER (see ENSMINGER A412271411). He died 18 Jan. 1937 in Lititz, PA and is buried in the Longenecker Cemetery. Elizabeth and Wellington had six children: Robert (A11438231), Victor (A11438232), Roy (A11438233), Helen (A11438234), Mary (A11438235) and Janet Marie (A11438236).

A11438231 Robert PFAUTZ was born 28 Sept. 1888. He married Amelia ESHLEMAN (see ESHLEMAN A5). Robert died 4 Jan. 1961.
A11438233 Roy PFAUTZ married Mary DIEHM.
A11438234 Helen PFAUTZ married Atwood KREIDER.
A11438235 Mary PFAUTZ married John KEEHN.
A11438236 Janet Marie (aka Nettie) PFAUTZ was born 14 Jul. 1898 in Rome, PA. She was baptized on 20 March 1921 at the Lititz Moravian Church in Lititz, PA. She married Elvin Guy BRUBAKER (see BRUBAKER A7237132) on 27 Oct. 1921 in Lancaster, PA. She was died 7 May 1973 in Lancaster and is buried in the Lititz Moravian Cemeter in Lititz, PA.
