The Hoolihan FamilyFirst Generation A Patrick HOLOGHAN* b. 1821 in Ireland and d. abt. 1875. He was a coal miner or an iron miner. He m. Catherine KERMAN* (which is given on her daughter Margaret's birth certificate) or CAIRNES. She b. 1826 in Ireland and d. bef. 1880. In 1861 census, they were living at 25 Bridgend St., Faskine, Old Monkland, Co. Lanark, Scotland. Patrick was listed as 40 yrs., and Ironstone miner, and his birthplace as Ireland. Catherine was listed as 35 yrs., her birthplace in Ireland. Their children were: Mary (A1), Charles (A2), Patrick (A3), Catherine (A4), John (A5), and Margaret* (A6). A1 Mary HOLOGHAN b. abt. 1849. She listed as 12 yrs. in 1861 census, her birthplace in Ireland. However, her parents were married in Scotland. Either the Ireland recording in the census was an error or her parents went back to Ireland after they were married OR the marriage recording is incorrect and it took place in Ireland. I suspect an error in the census. A2 Charles HOLOGHAN b. abt. 1851 (listed as 10 yrs. in 1861 census). It was also recorded in the census that he was a scholar, and his birthplace was in Faskine, Lanarks. A3 Patrick HOLOGHAN b. abt. 1857. He was listed as 4 yrs. in the 1861 census, and his birthplace recorded as in Faskine, Lanarks. A4 Catherine HOLOGHAN b. abt. 1859. She was listed as 2 yrs. in the 1861 census, as was her brother, John. They may have been twins, or the census is wrong about their ages. Catherine's birthplace was listed as in Faskine, Lanarks. A5 John HOLOGHAN b. abt. 1859. He was listed as 2 yrs. in the 1861 census, as was his sister, Catherine. They may have been twins. His birthplace was listed as in Faskine, Lanarks. A6 Margaret HOLOGHAN* (known as Maggie) b. 30 Mar. 1860 in East District, Faskine, Old Monkland Parish, Lanarkshire, Scotland. She was listed as 11 months in the 1861 census. She lived at No. 69 Bairds Rows, Bothwell Park, Scotland. She was a domestic servant. She d. on 26 Apr. 1941 at 54 Kensington Terrace, Passaic, NJ. Her death certificate lists that she lived at 54 Kensington Terrace, Passaic, NJ and was 76 years old. However, if she was born in 1860, like the Hibernian Research Co. found, she would have been 81 at her death in 1941. Her death certificate also lists "J. Hoolihan" and "M. Shaw" as her parents. Jack Gilmour, her grandson, recalls that the death certificate informant was a man (his uncle?), who was not known for paying attention to details. Maggie is bur. at the St. Nicholas Cemetery in Passaic, NJ. On 10 Feb. 1880, she m. John Francis GILMOUR* (see GILMOUR A1) at the Roman Catholic Chapel, Mossend, Bothwell Co., Lanark, Scotland, by priest James Milne, C.C. Witnesses were John Hoolaghan and Catherine McCormick. In 1881, they were recorded as living at 70 Bothwell Park, Bothwell, County Lanark, Scotland. John Gilmour was listed as 24 yrs. old, a coal miner, and his birthplace as Ireland. Margaret was recorded as his wife, 20 yrs. old, her birthplace as Faskin Lanarks. Bernard Donley, a 50 yr old widowed boarder and coal miner, was recorded, his birthplace being Ireland. John Donley, a 20 yr. old single boarder and coal miner, was also recorded, his birthplace being Ireland. Next door, at 69 Bothwell Park, Charles Houghlan, age 27, was born in Faskin. He was living with his wife, Elizabeth and family. Maggie and John could not be found in the 1891 Census returns for Lanarkshire or Renfrewshire (indexed). Sources: play information from The Yeats Reader, edited by Richard J. Finneran, published by Scribner Poetry in 1997. Information about family from Jack Gilmour of Florida, he obtained a death certificate for Margaret Hoolihan and his other sources were from the Hibernian Research Company, Ltd. They seemed to have found a marriage certificate for Margaret Hologhan and John Gilmour. They also consulted the census records for 1881 and 1891, looking for John Gilmour and Margaret Hologhan in Scotland. John and Maggie were in 1881/625/1/10 p. 18. The company also seemed to have found Maggie's birth certificate. The company also found the Hologhans in the Census returns for 1861, 1861/652/3/10/82. They could not find the death of Mary Gilmour (maiden name Morgan) in the General Indexes from 1880 to 1930. Recognize any names? Direct quetions, comments, corrections & additions.
