“Oh, I can’t do this!” Kari said as we walked towards her apartment. She turned around and tried to go back. “Tell Brian I said hi.”
“Oh no you’re not.” I grabbed Kari’s arm and started to drag her down the hallway. “You have to talk to him, not us.”
“Besides, it’s not so bad,” Nicole added. “All you have to do is explain where you’ve been.”
“That’s bad.”
“Well you should of thought of that before you left,” I blurted out. Kari shot me a cold glare and I gave her an apologetic look.
“Hey, is that the guys?” Nicole asked us, squinting down the hallway at the four approaching figures.
“I think so.”
As the guys got closer, I noticed the looks of shock on their faces as they recognized Kari. “Hey girls,” Nick called. He turned to Kari and eyed her up and down. “What is she doing back, trying to kill Brian?”
“I’ll kill you if you don’t mind your own business,” Kari hissed. “How is he?”
“Miserable, no thanks to you,” Nick answered.
“Look, there’s no need to act like this,” Kevin quickly cut in before Kari could respond to Nick’s rude comment. “Brian’s not doing so well, but I think he’d be a lot better if he saw you Kari.”
Everyone looked at her expectantly. Kari looked down at her Nikes and sighed. “All right, I’ll go. Amy, please come with me?”
I nodded and we started our journey down the hallway. As we approached her door, Kari reached out her shaking hand to touch the doorknob.
“Go ahead Kari,” I coaxed her softly.
Kari snapped her hand back and turned to me, her eyes brimming with tears. “I can’t, I just can’t,” she sobbed. “He’s gonna hate me, I just know it.”
I gave Kari a reassuring hug. “It’s okay Kar, I’m sur-”
The door flew open. Brian was standing there, his pale cheeks tear stained and his dull blue eyes filled with fresh tears. “Kari?” he asked hoarsely rubbing his eyes as if to see if she was truly standing before him.
“Brian, I’m so sorry!” She ran into his outstretched arms and sobbed even harder. “I love you Brian,” she managed to choke out through her tears.
“I love you too.”
I smiled softly at them and walked away to find Nick and the others. I found him outside waiting for me in the car.
"How did it go?” he asked.
“They’re going to be fine.” Nick started pulling away when I turned around and saw that the girls and their car seats were missing. “Wait a second Nick, where are the girls?! Oh my God, I’m such a bad mother! I’ll never forgive myself if-”
“Amy, calm down, it’s okay,” Nick reassured me, shaking my arm to snap me out of my daze. “My mother wanted them to stay with her for the week. The guys and I brought them down there with all of their things before we came here.”
“Thank God,” I said as I let out a sigh of relief. “I thought I left them somewhere or something.”
“That settled, would you like to go to dinner?”
“Okay,” I agreed. I sank back in my seat and looked over at Nick. He was such an amazing person. I was so glad I had found him.
