Jim Reeves: The Jim Reeves Connection - A Tribute To Gentleman Jim |
40th Anniversary: July 31, 1964 - July 31, 2004 |
![]() Forty years ago, a small Beechcraft Bonanza private airplane plunged from the sky just short of its destination: Nashville airport. Both occupants of the plane were killed. One of them was Jim Reeves, the other was his pianist, Dean Manuel. Jim Reeves was a true anomaly. He grew up in Texas in the 1920s and '30s, but didn't sing western swing or Texas beer joint music. Instead, he sang smooth and sweet country music and country-flavored pop music, thereby pioneering the Nashville Sound. When nearly all his contemporaries were trying to rock 'n' roll, Jim Reeves had the courage to go low and slow. His big hit, Four Walls, was not only a great record, but a groundbreaking one. Most of what happened in country music in the late '50s and '60s took its cue from that one record. For many years, Jim was the only country artist selling overseas, especially in Europe, so it's only fitting that Bear Family should comprehensively celebrate his life and work. We truly have something for every Jim Reeves fan . from the most dedicated to someone who's just beginning to wonder what the fuss is about. |
