Peter Rosendale did the wonderful "Satanic Majesty" painting, Harald Fischer and Mick Dillingham are responsible for the drawings used in the booklet, the collage for this was put together by Joachim.
THIS PROJECT WAS PLANNED SOME TIME BEFORE THE GREAT NEW BEATLES (ANTHOLOGY) BOOM. IT'S CERTAINLY NOTHING EXCITING TO HEAR THE 93RD VERSION OF "YESTERDAY" OR "WITH A LITTLE HELP FROM MY FRIENDS" BY FAMOUS SUPERSTARS WITH NO OWN IDEAS. YET THIS COMPILATION IS SOMETHING SPECIAL, AND I REALLY LIKE TO THANK ALL OF YOU FOR YOUR CONTRIBUTIONS I WAS HAPPY TO FIND IN THE MAIL DURING THE PAST 12 MONTHS! MY EARLIEST MEMORY OF THE BEATLES IS LOOKING THROUGH MY COUSIN'S RECORD COLLECTION. SHE WAS ABOUT 10 YEARS OLDER THAN ME AND HAD LOADS OF THESE PLASTIC FOLDERS THAT LOOKED LIKE PHOTOGRAPH ALBUMS, EACH ONE HOLDING ABOUT 30 SINGLES. IT WAS ALL STUFF FROM THE MID-60S. THE ONLY RECORD I CAN REMEMBER LIKING WAS "NEEDLES AND PINS" BY THE SEARCHERS. FOR SOME REASON I FOUND THIS EXTREMELY FUNNY.
I WAS ABOUT 12 WHEN I FIRST LISTENED TO THEM PROPERLY. MY FRIEND PAUL HAD THE RED AND BLUE COMPILATION SETS. THE TRACK I LIKED IMMEDIATELY WAS "LADY MADONNA" - ESPECIALLY THE VOCAL SOLO - I'VE ALWAYS BEEN A STRONG PROPONENT OF THE "IF-IN-DOUBT-GO-BA-BA-BA" SCHOOL OF SONGWRITING.
BY THE TIME I WAS 18 MY RECORD BUYING HABITS HAD GONE A BIT STRANGE. MY MAIN INTEREST WAS PUNK, BUT AT THE SAME TIME I ALSO WANTED TO BE A JAZZ PIANIST, SO I BOUGHT MANY RECORDS OF KEITH JARRETT. I ALSO STARTED BUYING CLASSIC ALBUMS OF THE 1960S. ONE DAY I CAME ACROSS AN AMERICAN COPY OF "MAGICAL MYSTERY TOUR" - THIS IS THE ALBUM VERSION THAT HAS THE SOUNDTRACK ON ONE SIDE, AND NON-ALBUM HITS OF THE PERIOD ON THE OTHER. I COULD TAKE OR LEAVE "MAGICAL MYSTERY TOUR", BUT FLIP THE DISC OVER AND... WELL, I'M STILL NOT SO SURE THAT A BETTER SIDE OF VINYL EVER EXISTED. "HELLO GOODBYE", "STRAWBERRY FIELDS FOREVER", "PENNY LANE", "BABY YOU'RE A RICH MAN", AND "ALL YOU NEED IS LOVE". ENOUGH SAID. I MOVED ON TO "ABBEY ROAD" AND QUICKLY WORKED MY WAY BACKWARDS, FINALLY STOPPING WITH "HELP" AND "RUBBER SOUL", NEITHER OF WHICH I LIKED A GREAT DEAL.
MOST PEOPLE NOWADAYS SEEM TO ACKNOWLEDGE "REVOLVER" AS THE BEATLES' BEST EFFORT. I WOULDN'T DISAGREE WITH THAT, BUT MY PERSONAL FAVOURITE IS "THE WHITE ALBUM". IT HAS SOME DUDS ON IT FOR SURE, BUT IT WORKS BRILLIANTLY AS A WHOLE. TO THINK THAT GEORGE MARTIN HAD WANTED IT PARED DOWN TO A SINGLE RECORD! BOTH OF THOSE ALBUMS WOULD BE IN MY PERSONAL TOP TEN.
MY COVERS ARE A COLLAGE OF "OH DARLIN", "FREE AS A BIRD", AND "WITHIN YOU WITHOUT YOU". THREE FINE EXAMPLES OF THE BEATLES NOT BEING TERRIBLY GOOD. "FREE AS A BIRD" SLAYED ME WHEN I FIRST HEARD IT - JEFF LYNNE TURNS THE TABLES AND MAKES THE BEATLES SOUND LIKE ELO. I HAVE TO APOLOGIZE FOR THE SECOND VERSE MAKING MARGINALLY LESS SENSE THAN IT MIGHT HAVE - NOBODY I ASKED COULD WORK OUT THE WORDS. AH WELL, AS THE ORIGINALLY RECORDING SEEMS TO HAVE CAPTURED JOHN LENNON IN THE PROCESS OF WRITING A SONG, IT'S NOT SO SURPRISING THAT RUBBISH FOUND ITS WAY ONTO THE TAPE... MIND YOU, THE SECTIONS WRITTEN LATER (PRESUMABLY BY PAUL) ARE NO BETTER REALLY, BY THE WAY, I DO ACTUALLY LIKE THE FINISHED TRACK.IT'S HARD TO CRITICIZE THE BEATLES OBJECTIVELY - THEIR SIGNIFICANCE IN BOTH CULTURAL AND MUSICAL TERMS GOES WAY OFF THE SCALE. SO I WON'T BOTHER TO TRY. ALL I'LL SAY IS THAT IN THE YUKIO YUNG FANTASY MUSIC LEAGUE THEY'RE UP THERE WITH THE BEACH BOYS, JOHN COLTRANE, J.S. BACH AND THE RESIDENTS - ARTISTS LIKE THE PRETTY THINGS, RADIOHEAD, MARVIN GAYE, THE BUZZCOCKS AND XTC ARE SNAPPING AT THEIR HEELS. THE BEATLES ARE, HOWEVER, FAR TOO MANY POINTS ADRIFT OF WIRE, FOR SERIOUS CHAMPIONSHIP HONOURS.

THEY APPARENTLY RE-FORMED AFTER WITNESSING FRANK ZAPPA'S GROUP PERFORMING WALRUS LIVE ON STAGE IN BIRMINGHAM, ENGLAND, IN THE EARLY SPRING OF 1988. SUFFICIENTLY INSPIRED, THEY DUG OUT THEIR INSTRUMENTS AND PRACTICED EVERY DAY FOR FOR TWO YEARS BEFORE COMMITTING THEIR OWN VERSION TO TAPE. LEGEND HAS IT THEY WERE SO DISAPPOINTED WITH THE RESULT THAT THEY IMMEDIATELY SPLIT UP, AND VANISHED FROM THE FACE OF THE EARTH! WHEN THE STUDIO WAS SOLD IN 1994, THE TAPE WAS DISCOVERED IN A PLASTIC ICELAND BAG IN A SKIP, FROM WHENCE IT WAS RESCUED AND RE-MIXED ESPECIALLY FOR THIS PROJECT.

SOME WOULD HAVE SAID THAT I'D MISSED MY CHANCE TO DO THE DEFINITIVE LENNON INTERVIEW; HELL, THE GUY WAS DEADER THAN PLATFORM HEELS. BUT SOME DAYS YOU GET A KNOCK ON THE DOOR AND WHEN YOU OPEN IT A BIG DUDE IN A HAT SAYS "HI, MY NAME'S CHARLIE CHANGED-PRECONCEPTIONS", AND YOU KNOW YOUR WHOLE LIFE IS ABOUT TO DO A U-TURN ON THE AUTOBAHN IN HEAVY TRAFFIC. A COUPLE OF MONTHS BACK I WAS IN THE MELODY MAKER OFFICE, WORKING ON A STORY ABOUT A NEW STRAIN OF MUSICAL SUBCULTURE; THERE WERE KIDS IN SWANSEA WHO WERE STARTING TO PLAY SOME GODAWFUL COMBINATION OF SEVENTIES DISCO AND SKIFFLE. THEN I GOT A CALL FROM SOME CHICK WHO WORKED FOR A COMPANY CALLED "OTHERPLACECOMM". THEY'D INVENTED A SUPERNATURAL COMPUTER MODEM WHICH LET YOU PICK UP MESSAGES FROM DEAD PEOPLE ON YOUR PC, WAS I INTERESTED? I TOLD HER TO TRY SOME OTHER SUCKER, MAYBE AN ELDERLY FEMALE NERD WHO'D JUST LOST HER HUSBAND. THEN SHE SAID THE REASON SHE WAS RINGING ME WAS SHE'D GOT JOHN LENNON ON THE LINE AND HE WANTED TO TALK TO ME. I STARTED ANOTHER SLICK PUT-DOWN BUT SHE JUST SAID "PUTTING YOU THROUGH", AND THERE WAS THIS VOICE SAYING "IS THAT JIM PIE?" AND I'D HAVE RECOGNIZED THAT ACCENT IF HE'D WRITTEN DOWN WHAT HE WANTED TO SAY AND GOT MAO TSE TUNG TO READ IT. OK, MAYBE NOT THEN, BUT DEFINITELY RECOGNIZED IT...

"OH DARLIN'" WAS RECORDED ON A AP-308764YY MANUFACTURED BY THE AKRON PETROCHEMICALS. THIS WAS PRETTY MUCH A MICROPHONE ATTACHED TO A COLCHESTER BANTAM LATHE. THE AP-308764YY WAS FIRST BUILT IN 1946, AND WAS COMMONLY FOUND IN AMERICAN FAIRGROUNDS THROUGHOUT THE 1950S. ELVIS USED A SIMILAR MODEL (THE AP-30892ZZ) TO MAKE HIS FIRST RECORDING - A GIFT FOR HIS MOTHER. THE ACETATE OF "OH DARLIN'" WAS DOCTORED USING THE SONIC SOLUTIONS PROCESSING SYSTEM.

WE ONLY EVER GOT ONE COPY OF THE RECORD, Y'KNOW. I THINK THE GOVERNER PLAYED IT TO SOME PEOPLE HE KNEW, BUT NOTHIN' EVER HAPPENED. WHEN FREDDY GOT OUT HE TOOK THE RECORD AWAY WITH HIM.
