The Memorable Moments of the 1968-69 School Year |
|
The big change and realization of growth into adulthood. As a junior in high school. New thoughts. New friends. New interests.
Music, litrerature, art. How many times did those three words answer a question. Music末a new basis for thought. Records and records and tapes. Beginning my realization that music has to be created. Creating music. Mine. No more top 40 or combo. Creating my initial sambas with Michael Burroughs. First recording session in the basement of Midsummer Reflection. Success and praise. Continuing songwriting with Mike and rising to local popularity with Prayer to a Candle. Recording of that in same basement "studio" and more smiles. Taping various pop-folk recordings with the Marlborough, featuring Randy Scruggs. Entertainment at school assemblies with the guys of the Marlborough, an unorganized group of many talents. Sitting in with Bill Anderson's group one night, and memories re-arrive. Top 40. Meeting Harry Palmer and discussing songwriting. Composing music for Fugto Enterprises Etcetera, another unorganized corporation of complete underground supplies and data. Recording Grease. Literature末becoming a writer in Fugto. Originating the first several issues of contemporary underground literature with Terry and Richard. Hitting in Mtsu. Proposing the Moodessay and writing poetry to Susan. Art末a gradual fall. Boring art class. Painting my best, the piece at Susan's. Illustrating for Fugto and getting pushed into school posters, bulletins, cartoons, and murals. Oh for talent. Ho hum.
Susan Melinda Saltonstall. A girl. For the whole year and continuing. Setting the record for fights and breakups. The prom. Problems with money, parents. Dates. Movies. Christmas. Meetings in halls. So much fondling and love and tears. Chorus frolic. Writing while on vacation. Sarah. Cheating. And on and on. Rings. Records. Songs. Poetry. Cards. Moods. Phone calls. Love.
School. Gym末Brimm, Terry, Padgett, Audie, Hair. Chorus末First row boys, Ferguson, Anderson, Goad, Gore. Susan in the back. English末Buckley, dumbbell. Short story, bore plus. Study Hall末nothing, except bookstore working with Biggs. Giving stuff free and Mrs. Eldridge's big greasy sarcastic smile when being "fired." History末L.K. Thompson. Advanced. Houle and the answers. Biggs, Terry, Dennison and I being immature in the back. Anderson always making fun. Lisp. Art末bore plus plus. Doing nothing with Biggs. Getting straight a's. Taking smokes and cuts outside by the track. Typing末bore. Tiring and at the end of the day. Driving in the early year. Motorcycling in the late part.
Marlboro Filter Cigarettes. Me and my Marlboro's. Don't you wish you'd feel this way about your cigarettes? Cigars and spitting up. Pipes and free samples thru the mail. Smoking buddies. Ferguson, Burroughs, etc.
Side pocket Billiards. Copas. Frye. Ferguson. Anderson. Randy Harrell's drunk-ins. Myron, Burroughs, dry Ferguson, Hassle. Market place Coffee House. Burroughs, Clifton, Ferguson, Anderson, Saltonstall. Hullabaloo Club. Sarah and Tommy. Betty Winston's. Philosophy and goats. Jobs末Lazy Suzan. Grease, Ferguson's oneday stand, $.85 hr. I was MUCH too cool
to care about this junk!
