50 eligible league winners, 8 seconds, and the UCL defender makes 59 teams.
For the scheduling problems, UEFA limited the UCL to 56 teams only.
That means upto three league winners cannot participate in the UCL.
UEFA places these teams into the UEFA Cup Preliminary Round.
For the 1998-1999 season, Real Madrid CF from Spain defends their title
as the third Spanish team. San Marino is not allowed to enter. Total
number of eligible teams was 58. The league winners from Andorra
(ranked 57th) and Bosnia (Not Ranked - didn't play in tha last five years-
are not accepted to the ECL and they played in the UEFA Cup.
Italy, Germany, Spain, France, Holland, England, Portugal, and Greece had two teams.
