Hulk #6

Written by: John Byrne

Penciled by: Ron Garney

Summary/Review written by: Joseph B Canganelli

Summary:

In this issue we pick up where we left off two issues ago, with the Hulk fleeing from Tyrannus. The Hulk lands in a swamp, totally ignorant of the fact that the Man-Thing is watching him, and promptly falls asleep, transforming back into Dr. Bruce Banner. Then Dr. Banner awakes to find his dead wife, alive in front of him. Next we learn that nothing is as it seems, when Banner discovers that his "wife" is a plant. This causes Dr. Banner so much stress he attempts to change into the Hulk, but instead passes out. That may have temporarily saved him from Tyrannus, who is looking, in vain, for the Hulk. Next, we are see Dr. Banner being held captive by Owen Candler, who is responsible for his wife’s reincarnation, as he explains his obsession with plants, and his plans for world domination. We are left with Candler pushing Dr. Banner to his apparent doom.

Review:

Although I loathe admitting it, I don’t hate this issue nearly as much as I hated the first five issues. Things actually happen in this issue (even if they are things that I am not interested in), the pace it much faster than any of the previous issue (which about like saying one turtle is faster than another). Of course there is no action, no excitement, and worst of all NO HULK (or almost no Hulk). I mean for Christ sake, this IS the Hulk, I expect the Hulk to appear on a little bit more than three freaking pages. There is also the fact that I could not care less about the Man-Thing. Maybe he and the Hulk would work well together, since neither of then are traditional super-heroes types, but I just have absolutely no interest in a big green plant guy that lives in a swamp, unless Alan Moore happens to be writing about him. I did like the cliffhanger ending, and I am actually looking forward to the next issue, since it will be Byrne’s last.

Again Ron Garney made this comic book worth the $1.99 that I paid for it, with his wonderful illustrations. Considering how little he was give to work with, the issue looks incredible. I wonder if he was as disappointed as I was by the Hulk’s almost nonexistence in the issue. I am sure that he signed on to pencil this book, so that he could draw the Hulk; not leaves, trees, frogs, armadillos, and many other horribly boring things, like Dr. Banner getting bitch slapped by that Candler guy. I can’t wait to see the Hulk kick his sorry vegetable-loving ass, of course with Byrne, you never know what stupid thing is going to happen next, maybe the Hulk and Candler will get married.
