Rose of Versailles Gown

This costume was created because I love doing the Fanime masquerade. A while back, I'd sang the Aria de Mezzo Carraterra from Final Fantasy VI while dressed as Celes. And a lot of people remembered it and loved it. I wanted to do the same thing again, only this time with a dress that I made myself and with a significantly harder operatic aria.

I was watching Rose of Versailles at the time, and one of the characters, Yolandre de la Polignac (Gabrielle Martin) enchanted Marie Antoinette with her beautiful voice.  I thought, here is my character. I just need to find and learn a beautiful operatic aria, make the dress, and sing.  It'll be great.

Sadly, the opera that I fell in love with was Ave Maria by Mozart.  (Or rather, a Ave Maria)  I had been planning on doing something light hearted. But the music was so beautiful. And Mozart is from the correct time period.  So I decided to do it.  That, combined with the dark colors of my dress, convinced me that I should be praying for something...perhaps I'd be praying over one of the many deaths in the series.
Conveniently, Yolandre loses a daughter during the series. So I originally worked out the skit to have her praying for her daughter.  But then I realized that I was being way too obscure. So I figured that it would be better to be Marie-Antoinette, a far better known character, praying for her son, who she also loses during the series. So, the character changed...sort of. I still think of this as my Polignac costume, not my Antoinette costume. Considering that all of the characters have blonde hair (except Jean) and change clothing, I figure I could be any of them.
Incidentally, the costume was very easy, although it is fiendishly uncomfortable.  However it looks complicated and has won a Technical Merit award at Fanime, and a 4th Place and Honorable Mention (for "Most Inspirational" whatever that means) at the Cherry Blossom Festival.  Not to mention, it makes people think of me as a "real costumer", whatever that means, which is a good thing.  Despite that Armitage, which was a lot harder, doesn't make me a "real costumer".  People are crazy.
