A Surprised Scott

By Rita Widmer

"Scott, may I have a word with you?" asked Betty, walking out of the Green Room.

"How about over a dinner and a movie?" asked Scott.

"Where shall we eat?" asked Betty.

"Betty, every time we get a little closer you..."

"Scott, I'd like to go. I just asked you where shall we go."

"I would like to go out with you."

"You would?!"

"How about eight o'clock?"

"Love to."

"Great," said Betty, who leaned over and kissed him on the cheek. "Iíve got some work to do. Until tonight."

"See ya," said Scott, and added after she was out of earshot, "Yes!!"

That night, Betty and Scott were sitting at a table for two in the Chinese restaurant.

"Betty, I canít believe my luck," said Scott.

"Well, you can believe it," said Betty.

"I hope so. This isnít some kind of trick?"

"Scott, I love you. That is why I agreed." Betty didnít even realize what she just said.

"Betty, you mean it?"

Betty looked down at her food and looked up, and said, "I do."

"I love you, too."

They went on eating, not quite sure what to say.

Betty and Scott were walking out of the movie to her apartment. "So what did you think of the movie?" asked Betty.

"I didnít watch most of it. I couldnít keep my eyes off of you. You look really beautiful tonight," said Scott.

"No, you were trying to make a move on me all night."

"Maybe so, but I meant what I said."

They arrived at the building. "Good night, Scott."

"Betty, how about a good bye kiss?"

"Not a chance."

Scott had a disappointed look on his face as Betty added, "But a good night kiss will be fine." Scott leaned over and kissed her, and for once she didnít fight it.
