Betty was about to leave for college, but first she was going to tell her Dad what she wanted out of life. "I want to be somebody, maybe a famous writer for the New Yorker, and, one day, settle down with the man I love," she explained in excitement.

"I hope everything will work out. It'll take a lot of hard work, but I know you can do it. You have the talent and the will to make something of yourself. Remember, it's a man's world," her dad, Mike, admonished.

"Thanks, Dad. I'll keep that in mind. Well, I've got a bus to catch. Are you coming with me?"

"No, let's say good - bye here. I'm going to miss you, especially since your mother passed away."

"Dad, I'll be home as much as possible. I'm going to miss you, too. Good - bye!" She leaned over and kissed him on the cheek.

Betty was enjoying college life. She was a very hard worker, but she did join the Debate team and Speach team, sing in the Concert Choir, and of course, spend time with her friends. Her boyfriends were never too serious, just out to have some fun.

A transfer student named Steve Sherwald joined the choir in her sophmore year. Betty decided to greet the new kid afterwards. "Hi, I'm Betty, and I'm glad you decided to join the choir," she said nervously.

"How do you do? I'm Steve. Thank you. Now I'm glad I joined. Are you taking some general education classes?" he cheerfully asked.

"No, I'm getting a degree in journalism with a minor in history," Betty explained.

"A girl with an education. What next?"

"If that is your attitude, then I'm sorry I met you," said Betty in annoyance.

"Hey, I was just joking." He grabbed her arm lightly to stop her.

"All right. I'll trust you this time. How about some dinner? Would you like to join me?"

"I would love to."

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The romance was budding. They went out for a couple of weeks. One night, they headed home from a movie. It was a wonderful musical, and Betty started to sing one of the songs.

"You have a beautiful voice. I think singing professionally would be more suited for you," said Steve.

"Just because I'm a woman? I'd never make it, anyway. I'd get stage fright."

"I just thought that you have more talent in singing then writing, but you're right. It is more suitable for a women."

Betty ignored the statement, but it was gettig harder each time he did it. He would always interupt her with chauvenistic remarks when she would talk about her future. "Well we're at my dorm building," said Betty. "Good night."

"Good night." He took her in his arms and kissed her for the first time. She was left standing there in a daze.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Betty was talking to a group of her friends when she overheard another conversation.

"I was out with the hottest guy on the campus, Steve Sherwald. He's fooling that other girl. What's her name?" asked the first girl.

"I don't know, but she needs to get her act together if she thinks Steve likes her," said the second girl.

"What he really wants, she won't give him. There's only one way to get a guy," said the first girl.

Betty couldn't stand it any longer. "Let's go. I don't like the atmosphere here," said Betty, with tears in her eyes.

"Are you all right?" asked her best friend April.

"No. I'm going to find him and get the whole story," said Betty.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Betty was getting angrier every minute. She couldn't find Steve anywhere until late that night.

"Steve, I want to know the truth?" asked Betty.

"About what?"

"I overheard a conversation while eating lunch. The girl said that she had a date with you and you were just using me."

"You believed her? Don't you trust me?"

"I don't know what I believe, but she did mention your name." Betty sighed, her ire melting away under Steve's innocent glance. "It must have been someone else with the same name, or something similar. I love you."

"I love you, too." Steve kissed her again.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

One night the truth came to her. She was heading to her dorm from the library. While she was there she met a really great guy who asked her out, but she had to turn him down. She was starting to realize things were over between her and Steve.

She was just about to enter her dorm when she saw a couple kissing. She recognized the guy. It was Steve. "How could you?" yelled Betty.

"Betty, I was just getting something out of her eye," stammered Steve.

"Yeah, right. Steve, it's over." She stormed into her dorm building.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

It didn't take Betty a long time to get over Steve. The hurt was stll inside her, though. He cheated her. She was having trouble opening up to guys now. She couldn't trust them. Betty worked hard, trying to become the best writer she could be.
